Transylvania is a historical region in today's central Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana and Maramureș, and occasionally the Romanian part of Banat.

*** Alba Iulia - Alba Carolina Citadel *** A town coated by the legendary halo of the great historical events that took place within its ancient walls, Alba Iulia has deeply got into the Romanian people's mind and soul. No other Transylvanian town has gathered so many crucial meanings and symbols. With thousands and thousands of years of human existence lying behind it, Alba Iulia represents the charming mirror in which all the ethnic groups of Transylvania can discover their vigor or their traditions of yore. The heart of Alba Iulia is Alba Carolina Citadel. Alba Carolina, the most representative bastion fortress in Romania and Southeast Europe, built upon the initiative of Emperor Charles the VIth of Habsburg, under the supervision of the French-born Austrian field marshal Eugene of Savoy, is wearing its royal robe. A royal Citadel, residence of the bishopric, capital of autonomous principality, and a military garrison, Alba Iulia has been during all historical periods the main political, administrative, religious, cultural, and military centre of Transylvania. We invite you to visit The Other Capital of Romania.
We came here for New Year's, and we didn't regret. Far from the crowded cities, and with such a beautiful Citadel, nicely decorated for the holidays, lots of places to buy hot wine, pies, local donuts, souvenirs, while you walk nicely around the old buildings of so different eras.
You will find relics and historical sites from the Roman Empire, Austrian type buildings, Romanian constructions, the Union Museum, and Union Hall.

Big Square is Sibiu’s historical centre, where there are important historical monuments, many of which are part of the UNESCO patrimony.
This is a very pleasant square. It is pretty much free from the modern signage that can ruin such an urban landscape. The dimensions of buildings to square are good and there is a good sense of open space and pleasant vernacular architecture enhances the beauty.
It snowed heavily while I was there and thus added to the sense of magic about the square.

Sighisoara is a magical medieval city. The historic centre is full of period buildings and wonderful atmosphere. The presence of the Vlad Dracula house adds to the mystery but the whole place is redolent with old world charm. The narrow streets and the scholar's stairs are all part of what could be a movie set of some tale of medieval Europe. Every part is oozing with history and is marvellously photogenic. It is one of those places to just sit and soak up the atmosphere.

This place surprised me. It is a memorial to the many victims of the communistic era. It is graphic and shows how the people were methodically imprisoned, tortured, and killed. First they did the intellectuals, then anyone suspected of being against the communists. Overall they must have killed millions. The museum is multi-floor but I could only take about 3/4 of it before I had to get out. The guide said we made it farther than most. Required viewing.

Church surrounded by round high fortified walls with holes to pour or fire through. Inside the walls are filled with rooms accessed by wooden steps and walkways it looks very attractive, painted white on dark wood. You can go up steps to enter inside the walls and look into some rooms. The church is worth a look in.

The oldest fortified church in Transylvania. You can climb up amongst the ruins, and there is a small museum. Fascinating.

Beautiful place to visit with family with colourful buildings. I visited with my 3 years old son the art museum (cost 10lei), the Cathedral and the Pinocchio Pizza. If you like historic Cathedral you will enjoy. You can not take photos inside any Cathedral or museum.
The Pinocchio pizza we ate a small pizza and was enough. The different and interesting about their pizza is that they put sesame seeds in the dough. So it has a interesting taste of seed. They also have crepes (with no seeds). It's a nice tiny place to eat with kids.

A fascinating collection of unique wooden headstones that immortalize details about the deceased.
This place has been on our to-do list for quite a while. We are glad we got to finally see it. The church and the crosses are beautiful, and it's worth spending some time visiting them. The church is currently under restoration, so there's not much to see inside, but on the outside it is splendid.
