Standing about 10 miles southwest of Stuttgart and now known mostly as an automobile industry center (especially for DaimlerChrysler and Smart), Sindelfingen has a long history, some of which can still be witnessed firsthand. The Romanesque St. Martin’s Church dates from the 11th century, while the old Rathaus (city hall) is now the municipal museum. Other Altstadt (old town) sites include the unique Schwätzweiber (gossiping women) statue and the Fachwerkhäusern (half timbered houses).

The main reason for my stop in Stuttgart was to take this tour. I had visited munich a few years back and missed out on the bmw tour because they were closed that week and have been wanting to do a tour ever since. I booked way ahead of time to ensure I had a spot. The tour was at 10:30am, they ask you to register 20min before though you can probably show up later. They do start right on time. They start with a video so if you are a minute or two late you can still come in during the video I guess. There is a free bus that takes you from the Böblingen station to the Mercedes customer center. The bus leaves approx 10min after the hour and half hour. The ride takes about 10min. You can easily take the S1 train from Stuttgart down which seemed to arrive right on the half hour. The tour itself takes you to two buildings. One where there are people assembling components into the cars on a moving assembly line.
The second where everythign is done by robot machines. They let you get up pretty close. The guide was very knowledgeable. They say the tour is 2hrs but its really more like 90min

What a place and what an incredibly inventive and creative people the Germans are. There is so much attention to detail in this place and so many things to do it would be easy to spend days here.
It cost us (a family of four) €64 for the day, which was pretty reasonable value. The food was much, much better than I expected. Yes, there were the junk food staples but there were also some really decent dining options.
Pretty tricky to get to by public transport but absolutely worth it.
Just so amazingly good!

The mall has almost everything you need. There are a lot of restaurants and specialty shops that sell bread, pastries and meats. Big selection of clothing shops to choose from. The mall is not open on Sundays (I arrived on a Sunday to find it closed) but as I later found out almost all shops are closed on a Sunday in Germany.

While the church tower and some of the windows are not Romenesque, the rest of the church is a beautiful example. Be sure to check out the main door on the west side of the building.

The museum presents a representative selection of contemporary art from the Collection of entrepreneur Peter Schaufler (†) and his wife Christiane Schaufler-Münch on more than 6,000 square meters. In order to convey an impression of the collection's diversity, its holdings are presented in changing special Exhibitions. The Schaufler Collection reflects important developments in German and international art over the past fifty years. Works by the ZERO movement and its precursors are among the the collector's earliest acquisitions. Other focuses include Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and Concrete Art. Important historical positions, such as those of Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, and Hanne Darboven, are represented as well as current works by artists who have continued these strans of developent up to the present. In addition to painting and sculpture, light art, installations, and contemporary photography occupy an important place in the collection.
Built upon what was once a production hall of the BITZER Sindelfingen factory, SCHAUWERK is an amazing place and exhibits personal pieces of the Scheufler family's personal art collection. Definitely worth a look.

The friendship Fountain at Sindelfingen's market place features very detailed figures that can move in parts. No entrance fee and good for photo shots with friends or just of the detailed work itself. In wintertime water is off and be careful at market days as the Fountain can be covered in parts by market stands.

Visit the oldest town hall in Sindelfingen, a very pleasant looking building, there are however two more town halls, the next newest one is opposite the market place, and contains an information office. The oldest one contains a small art gallery.

This town was my home for two and a half years. I loved everyday I spent here. I miss riding my bike past this fountain/sculpture. It is beautiful in all seasons. I especially appreciated it in the spring and summer when the flowers were in bloom.
