Riomaggiore (Rimazùu in the local Ligurian language) is a village and comune in the province of La Spezia, situated in a small valley in the Liguria region of Italy. It is the first of the Cinque Terre one meets when travelling north from La Spezia.

This trail has been closed by court order and is locked up on top with a barrier and signs stating it is closed below. Climbing over the fence or barrier can get you fined. Pay attention to the signage so that you don't go down a trail and the have to turn around and go back. The park gives you little information and to be truthful, start your hike in Manarola. The way the park sends you up is on to a highway and then thru the highway tunnel and then back down to Manarola or Riomaggiore. NO Views, just cars and a highway.

The famous Trail of love (Via Dell'amore) joined the Rio Maggiore and Manarola, which led a life so isolated from each other for centuries, that even the phonetics of the Italian language in these villages were different. Hard to believe, but this trail appeared only in the thirties of the XX century. The toponym "Trail of love" appeared unnoticed and is not associated with a real Romeo and Juliet from Rio Maggiore and Manarola. The trail was well-equipped (handrails, benches) in the sixties of the XX century. However, soil erosion destroys the slopes and causing landslides and rockfalls. Periodically, the trail began to close. Four Australian tourists were injured in 2012 due to a landslide and the trail was again closed for renovation. At this moment the trail is closed. Some intrepid tourists climbing over the fence and go at your own risk. We have not decided on this folly...

Make this village a must see if you are making your way through the different cities of Cinque Terre. The sun-faded and weathered colors on the houses that align themselves on the hillside are quite picturesque....and the panoramic views of the sea are really cool too.
Don't forget to wear comfortable walking shoes...there are a lot of steps and inclines that you will encounter. There are also trails that make their way in-and-out of the village that give you a different views of the town as well.
Bring your camera and get ready for lots of cool shots.

From the outside, this sanctuary is not overly impressive, but it is located fairly high up the hill from the harbour, and consequently there is a good view from the Piazza. Being Sunday, I only poked my head in for a couple of minutes, but was surprised at how peaceful it was in such a busy little village. Not many tourists around in the close neighbourhood, just locals enjoying the Sunshine or spending some reflective moments after mass.

The Castello is at the top of Riomaggiore. There is a side street (stairs) going straight up from the cove, but it doesn't seem to be signposted. We only found it coming back. It was a bit difficult to find and asked a couple of locals who pointed us in the right direction. The views are nice, but that's the only thing here, the castle is small and not really a destination.

A visit to Terra di Bargon gives you an insight into decades of wine making in the Cinque Terre region and specifically into the making of Sciacchetra. This wine is unique to the area and is a lovely wine to savour with some seasoned cheese.
Well worth a visit.

We heard about Pall from our daughter's friend who took a trek with him. From the time we met him in Riomaggiore until the end of the day, we had a blast. He took us on a 12 km hike though all sorts of out-of-the-way spots and personalized the day with his genuine love of the area and the people who live there. We came across countless folks who he knew along the way.
At lunch, Pall brought us to Gli Ulivi in Volastra. I had one of the best meals there in our 10 days in Italy - Fresh pasta with clams and bottarga.
I highly recommend Trekguyd.
