While staying in Essen for several weeks this summer, we often drove to Hattingen to walk around, do some shopping, and take photos of the medieval buildings. Hattingen has many of them. The town isn't very big, so you won't feel overwhelmed. There's ample parking and some nice shops and eating places.

Superb collection of modern art - as good as any other gallery in Europe. Well displayed in large halls. Free admission to all normal Exhibitions. Cafe and shop. Reception and cloakroom staff very friendly and helpful. Gallery attendants are appalling. The pictures are behind glass, but if you approach within 1 metre they bark at you to stand away from the paintings. Horrible. No wire on the floor to indicate you cannot approach within 1 metre, no notices about this either. These are the worst gallery attendants anywhere and the gallery needs to sort this out. We had been told they were horrible but didn't really appreciate how bad until we went!

Good selection of shops but in the bad weather and winter time it not as nice as an indoor shopping center. It is missing Karstad and some of the shops are quite small. Indoor foodcourt with different style restaurants. Clean and free toilets. Lots of parking space. Saturday is a rush. Day time Friday was very good time to visit!

This is really a fun way to travel, you fly over the Wupper river and the cars on the high street, a little bit like a roller coaster at bends........

Having done quite a few of the Ruhr Valley museums we thought a steel museum would help piece together the story of coal and energy in the valley. Wow this place is great. You wander through the bunkers and follow the path of the raw materials to the blast furnace. A lift takes you to the top of this now fossil of industry and the blast furnace. Great views of how industry changed the world. At the bottom the flow of the steel path is visible and amazing to think this is our recent history and the closest we have been to such an amazing man made structure. There is a kids trail with a blue mouse to help and a very posh restaurant with views of the machines.

The botanical garden has been a refreshing companion at the time of my studies in Bochum. There is not a particular spot I would recommend. Just walking around down the hill to the lake is beautiful. There are many signs to illustrate the plants and recently Q codes have been added to access online material about the place.

Took two tweens here for 3 hours of fun. Was initially concerned about height/safety etc but their system seems very well thought-out/secure. After girls got into harnesses and had a safety briefing, they clipped into the course and were off. We sat at a picnic table on the ground to listen to them having loads of fun. One quick bathroom break and they were up again. Daughter wishes we had something like this at home. Really great day!

A Sunday Morning 40km Mountainbike Trip into the "Bermuda Triangle" sparsely populated between Wuppertal, Essen and Bochum is once again turning an experience! My friend Stefan "Mr. Motivator" and mate Oli invited me on this drizzly 13C morning to tagg along on their 40km round trip, 650m steep ascents and 2h30... How could I refuse?! Much to our surprise the trip up to the promised "Biergarten" only took us an hour. Scrambled eggs on "speck" dices of bacon and an essential "Frühschoppen" Pils where readily waiting. 4 donkeys are roaming free there and they make just about everyone smile, so cute and loveable. I will be back soon, by car then and accompanied by my kids. This very popular "Biergarten" is a must for hikers and bikers, due to the beatiful forrest and floating Mountains with beatiful views. I am delighted that after 4 years living in this vastly underestimated "Bergische Land" I still see new things and very family fun attractions. Thanks again to my friends Stefan and Oli... who patiently waited for me on top of each ascent... !

The extraction, processing and utilization of mineral geo-resources, subsumed here under the term ‘mining’, is a subject with great significance for the development of human civilization. The global importance of mining is increasing today, and will no doubt continue to do so in future. This is clear from the political campaigns and the intense media reactions associated with issues of raw material supplies and shortages, and also resource conservation (recycling and the use of renewable energy sources). The work of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, as the leading international museum on the mining industry, takes place within this socially relevant context. As one of the Leibniz Association’s research museums, the DBM is devoted to investigating the extraction, processing and utilization of mineral raw materials in the context of social, cultural, ecological and economic dynamics, spanning different historical periods. The museum shows the lasting impact which these processes have had on the development of society, and preserves relevant evidence for future generations. In short: The Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum is the cultural memory of the mining industry.
My Grandfather used to work in a coal mine for 20 years, so a visit to this museum was
a great honor for me.
The tunnels, the machines, everything were amazing, driving us back to the "black" years my opa had described us so many times.
I will be back...

Take a walk through the old narrow lanes and breathe the history of the village. Old houses and nicely rennovated in shale tiled frame technology, with a view for the details. Small pubs and inns at every corner, here you can make a night out.
