We were quite underwhelmed by Annapolis Royal in the shoulder season, but the Historic Gardens were the bright spot. There were more blooming than we thought would be, and it was a beautiful place to spend a few hours.Thank you for your review. Certainly, the Town of Annapolis Royal has seasonal changes and by late October has slowed pace considerably. We are thrilled that you were able to visit the Historic Gardens and enjoyed the experience!

Port-Royal National Historic Site

1939 re-creation of Canada's first permanent settlement includes costumed interpreters engaged in traditional handicrafts like woodworking.

This place was one reason we were drawn to Nova Scotia; it did not disappoint. The reconstruction was made several decades ago when attention to historical fact might give way to over-romanticizing. However, we did not see that.
The reconstruction was complete, except that there were no outhouses (the guides suggested that open country surrounding the site did not require privies). Moving from room to room, enactors explained who had lived there and how they knew what they were telling us. The settlers sent yearly reports back to France with details of day to day life and who was doing what.
The original settlement did not last long, but the reconstruction was a rich reminder of the effort needed to make even a start at occupying a foreign place.

Fort Anne National Historic Site

Historic site brings to life that part of Canada's past when conflict between Europe's empire-builders took place on the shore of the Annapolis River.

This is a rectangular shaped (4 point) fortification built by the Scots in 1629 to repel the French.
In 1632, it was ceded to the French - the history is amazing as the fort passes back and forth between British and French hands over the years.
The amazing thing is that this is the original structure built in 1702.

This market takes place twice a week (Wednesday & Saturday) in downtown Annapolis. There are a variety of farmers and artisans, and musicians and there is food and coffee available. This is a wonderful place to get a true sense of the 'flavour" of the community.

Sinclair Inn Museum

The Canadian Heritage site is a welcome surprise and a bit different of a view into the structures built on Canadian soil in the early 1700s. It's a bit cramped for myself being tall. The information on the boards around the self-guided museum is informative and bilingual. We didn't do the ghost stories as there were people downstairs sitting watching and it didn't look like there was much room. The view of the bay from the front door is stunning as well. A must-see when touring Annapolis Royal!

North Hills Museum

This museum was near to where we were staying, so we decided to check it out. It doesn't look like much from the outside, such a simple looking building. But the inside architecture is so very interesting, as are the collections of fine art and furnishings. And we have found, the guide inside a museum can make a museum so much more interesting, or not. This lady-guide was Great! She was friendly and provided us with so much interesting information. We spent more time here than we originally thought we would. We are glad we stopped here and do recommend it to others. Combine this with a visit to Port-Royal, another great attraction just down the road.

Far-Fetched Antiques and Art Gallery

Now centrally located in the heart of Annapolis Royal. Located in the Ol'Newman's building, this lovely majestic building from 1922 is now home to Canada's premier antiques & art gallery. Don't miss the secluded garden which features stone and metal garden statuary, and of course an authentic Tiki Bar.

We have enjoyed many movies and live productions at this incredibly active little facility in a very friendly town. From 10 minute plays, multi act productions by the local drama group, dance productions by visiting groups, touring Gilbert and Sullivan, first rate musical productions of every genre, hit movies, as well as thought provoking, lesser known movies arranged by the film society....... this theatre has it all. If you are visiting Annapolis Royal make sure that you check the King's Theatre web page to see if there is anything running during your stay. You won't regret it!
