Having read about the "marble towns" of the Alentejo, and thought a tour would be interesting, so we searched extensively on the Internet, finally finding Rota Tons de Marmore
We emailed late at night regarding the possibility of a tour the next morning, and got an immediate response.
Meeting Luis, outside the Town Hall in Borba, he guided us in our own car, first to a marble quarry, then the marble processing factory and finally an example of the use of the marble, in the main Fountain in Borba. Luis is a wonderful and informative guide, and in addition to explaining the process of marble production, pointed us to many highlights in the surrounding towns of Vila Vicosa and Estramoz.
Highly recommended as a complement to tours of the towns, churches and museums.

Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Aires em Viana do Alentejo
Another touristic Monument is the “Sanctuaries de Nossa Senhora de Aires.
You have to drive about 2 km to the outside of the village to visit this location.
The frontal part is imposing with his two bell towers one on each side, and is dating from the year 1755. Nice inside and also continue your visit on the sides behind the altar, there you will see allot of gifts and pictures from people who were asking a favour for something special, go and see by your selves, it is hard to describe this all. One special thing I never hadseen is the "Square Altar", very imposing piece of art.

Castelo de viana do Alentejo.
Is a simple but anyhow very nice medieval castle in almost in the middle of the village of Viana do Alentejo. You can park the Car in front of the castle, it has on the inside the “Tourist Information” the “Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia” and the formal “Igreja Matriz” to visit and a small exhibition. You have to pay a small amount pro person, leaving the tourist info, just cross and enter the formal Igreja, than after this take the stairway and visit the Igreja Matriz, nice maintained church who contains 12 small paintings showing the “Via Sacra” or the “Crucifixion”. After all this, you are able to walk around on the surrounding walls, in total a very nice location to spent some time in this classified National Monument.

To see this church you have to enter into the Castle of Viana do Alentejo, after entering, turn right and go into the tourist office to get your ticket for your visit.
When leaving the info, just go ahead and you will enter in the small church who is part of the great church.
After seen this one, go out and take the stairway to the church who is in the middle of the castle and worth the visit, one thing special on this church you rarely will see is the complete crucifixion showed in 14 small paintings pending on the walls around the church inside.

Its reassuring to see the future with large scale investment in wine production in Portugal in spite of all its economic & austerity problems .
We were taken to this very modern wine estate started in 2000,created with special regard to the Topographic , the clay ,sandy soil ,weather conditions to produce high quality grapes
It is set in 70 hectares of vineyards with magnificence views & a serenity not normal found on a wine estate . The buildings which house all the very latest equipment are set in to a hillside , careful landscaped which is deceiving when you get inside , its like a James Bond movie set .
We were meet by Anna Moreira who spoke perfect English , & looked after us for the 90 minute tour & tasting with enthusiasm,, knowledge ,& professionalism ,not normal found in guides
The final part was the tastings which was held in ultra modern hall ,which match the high standards of the wine & olive oil given as samples
Worth a definite trip to be assured that Portugal particular the Alentejo region will be producing for many years to come very high quality wine for limited consumption in Europe ,but
will exporting these high quality wines to the rest of the world , well done , full admiration to Anna & her colleagues & those all important investors
