Although Pekalongan is a small city, but it is also well known for its Batik, just as Yogyakarta and Solo (the other Batik cities in Central Java). It has an outstanding batik museum and it has Batik making workshop. You get to make your own batik handkerchief for as little as Rp.20,000.
This museum is in a colonial building and was opened by President Yudhoyono in 2006.
The batik pieces on display are hand-painted and include many valuable items, giving a good idea of the brightly-coloured Pekalongan style that is so different to the better-known and much darker styles of Yogyakarta and Solo. There were also representative pieces from Cirebon, Tegal, Madura and other places.
The guide was very well-informed on batik and his explanations ( in Indonesian, don't know if he speaks English) added greatly to our understanding.
There is a small restaurant with drinks, a fairly clean toilet (old style) and a workshop where you can see how batik is made. The photos on display indicate that they teach batik courses here.
We were hoping to buy some batik in the souvenir shop, but did not see anything we wanted.

We arrive there in the afternoon because of my family eagerness to get Pekalongan batik clothes. First impression is lots of collection but not well maintenance & upgrading for support facilities such as toilet, foodcourt etc. The price of each booths is various & depends on our budget. Unfortunately we arrive when most booths are close or ready to close so we don't get plenty of choice. Hopefuly local government can manage it more professional in order to get more customers.

Kampung Batik Kauman or Kauman Batik Village is the eldest of village in Pekalongan area knows as the center for Batik (Indonesian traditional garment industry). Currently there are 5 villages known as a center for Bantik but this Kauman is very unique, there you can stay at the local house (guest house) where you can join the local daily activities, see the local producing printing and hand writing batik, coloring process, to the final process and become ready to sell product. Some of the houses are still unique with Dutch colonial and Islamic influences.

I visited Batik Huza in Pekalongan on 12 May. They have some beautiful material: I bought a short-sleeve batik tulis shirt (Rp 550k), and loved a light green long-sleeve silk batik shirt which I didn't buy because of the price (Rp 1.5 million), which I couldn't justify given how rarely I would have an opportunity to wear it in Australia. The quality of their materials and design is first rate, but. being a boutique, it is pricey.
