We chanced upon this monument advertised as the oldest lighthouse in Germany during our afternoon outing to this seaside town not far from Lübeck. After being warmly greeted by the lighthouse keeper and having had a look at the multimedia maritime exhibit, we decided to go up to the top.
Our climb of more than 140 stairs was rewarded with a truly breathtaking view of the river and bay - we even managed to glimpse a historic ship making its way to the sea. We could clearly see the highrise Maritim hotel - which blocked the view somewhat and which was supposedly the reason for the lighthouse being discontinued a few decades ago. While we didn't make the tour offered on Sundays, we really enjoyed our visit, with the climb then justifying refreshments from the nearby Niederegger cafe.

Parking was tricky. We parked in the town of Niendorf and walked along the beach until we got to the walkway that led up the steep shore. There was no parking near the spot labelled Bodtener Steilufer on Google maps. Stunning views at sunset. Worth the walk.

At a pretty square there's the Seebad museum. Seebad means 'sea resort'. The museum uses modern exhibits to tell everything of the evolution from fishermen town to sea resort. Since Travemunde is at the former East German border, the removal of the border had impact on the town. The volunteers in the museum are very willing to explain everything.
I can't remember if it was all translated in English, but even if that's not the case, is interesting since it's very visual.

I have been traveling between Trelleborg, Sweden and Travemuende, Germany a great many times. This time I am traveling today. Normally the evening Ferry leaves at 22.00 hours and arrives at a decent time of something like 7.30 in the morning. Now on this particular day the 21/12 they decide to leave at 18.00 which likely means check in at 17.00. Now I can live with that but those horrific people of the TT line decides to arrive at Travemuende at 1.15 in the morning. Now what in the world do you do in Travemuende at 1.15 in the morning. This is very close to harassment. You cannot even have breakfast but will wander around the port like a ghost or continue to travel without any food. Now they will tell you that you can have breakfast on board but who in his right mind would wish to have breakfast at midnight.
The whole matter is very close to harassment and deplorable behavior.
