Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. It is located within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has an established maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port developed during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was (along with the nearby fishing village of Staithes) where Captain Cook learned seamanship.

A virtual visit to Dr Frankensteins laboratory with Geissler Tubes, Bouquet Tubes, Railway Tubes, Jacob's Ladder, telegraph system, early x-ray tubes and many more crackling spark, electric flame laden demonstrations. Showing the education of the young Victorians, using many of the static accessories and rare artefacts, as used by them. We hope your visit here will prove interesting, stimulating and will give an insight into this largely extinct branch of science.
Thank you for an incredible visit to the museum! We really loved the slides about Marconi and also the cannons! Nearly caught the cannonballs! The Wimshurst machines were amazing and our favourite was the Frankenstein finale! Thank you for the tea and biscuits, too. We really hope we can come again because it was the best museum that we've ever been to! Even if you are not interested in science, you will absolutely love this place as it is so fascinating. Loved the historical context behind the science too. Thanks again!!!!!

This is a great beach, about a 10 minute drive along the coast from central Whitby.
Not much about apart from a beachside cafe but a great spot for peace and quiet and to let dogs run about in the beach. Great view of the coastline.

Almost at the harbour mouth on the north side of the river is the rNLI museum. The modern boat house lies opposite. Here you have an old no. 2 rowing lifeboat, a set of models about famous rescues and hazardous trips on snow and over moors to launch and plenty of information (an d photographs) about the routine heroism of the lifeboat crew. Entry is free but do donate to this great charity. A small gift shop staffed by volunteers helps with the fundraising to help save lives at sea, on the beach and cliffs.

The Tea Garden is currently closed for winter. We will be open again in the spring from the Easter holidays until the end of September. See you then. Love Foss x
Went to look at the waterfall which after walking down a rather steep gradient I found it to be a bit of an anti climax, there was nothing spectacular about a very small waterfall. The tea garden had a wooden garden hut where you could get light refreshments, whilst my Sandwich was really tasty it didn't come with a Ciabatta as listed on the menu and I prefer to drink out of a proper cup not a paper one, the staff were really cheerful and the walk back up the incline to the car park was testing to anyone with any mobility issues.

The 199 steps sounds worse than it is. The steps are well made and a handrail on both sides. Plenty of space to pass others too. Plenty of chances to pause if you need to get your breath. It's worth stopping occasionally on the way up to get the view as it changes. It's well worth the climb to the top for the views across the bay, into the down etc. Obviously this climb and walk is better on a dry day as the view improves. It's worth the climb to explore the cliff top path, the church and graveyard and a simple way to get to the Abbey. Great little ice cream shop at the bottom of the steps as a reward too!

Striving to preserve an Edwardian atmosphere, this museum houses a variety of general collections.
When visiting Whitby this really should be first port of call. Situated uphill in Pannet Park about 10 minute walk from the railway station. The museum charges a very reasonable £5 for Adults, children free, and includes then free entry for 12 months. Also in...MoreThank you for recommending us highly, we're glad you enjoyed your visit.

This is a lovely historic church on top of the cliffs overlooking Whitby. It is definitely worth visiting as there is so much history and there are lots of things to read and see inside. There is also a small gift shop and friendly helpful volunteers.

In all seasons this beach offers great views and a bracing walk. Keep going north to the beautiful Sandsend. Dogs can be let loose in low season too. Unspoilt heritage.

We parked at the top carpark and walked in. This place is so beautiful and the village very quaint. There are lots of spots to stop on the way down and up to enjoy the views and shops. Definitely worth including on your trip to the area.
