Abbaye Saint-Jean-des-Vignes

This is a beautiful old abbey with a remarkably well preserved adjoining cloister. There is a nice grassy area to wander around and get good vantage points for photos. Plenty of display boards in English as well as French.
The Arsenal Museum is next door but was closed on our visit.
The Chevet Church dates from 1220 and the facade is over 80 metres high and towers above you with some intricate detail still clear on the stone and arches. The place was dismantled after the French Revolution and from 1805 it was used as a stone quarry, hence the fact only the foundations remain of most of the church.
A really lovely thing to visit of you're in Soissons.

Cathedrale Saint-Gervais Saint-Protais

Reviewed By Bozeman-Dublin - Dublin, Ireland

We had a lovely Sunday visit to Soissons and took in its stunning Cathedral, one of many nice ones in the region but up there among my favourites.
The inside is huge and cavernous but in the afternoon sun coming in the window the place was little up beautifully.
Some beautiful arches, columns, side chapels and art and the relics of Saint lie on view to the right as you walk up the central aisle.
The exterior has magnificent flying buttresses and ornate carved figures. It is huge and towers above the city.
I really found it very serene abd peaceful inside. It's not as big as say Amiens, nor as darkly git hic as Notre Dame de Paris, but it has its own charms, plenty of them, and I loved it.

Musee St Leger

Reviewed By snowflakespud - Reading, United Kingdom

Staying nearby we made the short trip to Soissons where wandering round a very pleasant small riverside town we saw signs for the museum
Extremely welcoming lady front of house explained in Franglais the route round the exhibits then out of that building round the cloister to the crypt and finally into the Abbey
All good stuff a bit of pre history some gallo-romano then the town though the ages laid out over three floors...then off to the crypt ....it's very crypt like and finally the Abbey ( which is only accessible via the museum) a huge space that is largely empty apart from some stone work randomly displayed round the edges and a fine 3D carving of hell
But all in all most impressive and well worth a visit
Tiny gripe as I'm barely bi-lingual some signage in English would have been appreciated
Exit via the start point and a chance to thank madam

Butte de Chalmont

Reviewed By Traveller282012 - Bristol, United Kingdom

We were looking for this after looking up memorials in the region. It is located south of Beugneux. On the main road is a single figure of a woman and then up the stairs on the top of the hill is a group of men (soldiers), representing what was sacrificed. It is truly beautiful and an ideal location. It has to be one of the things to see when in the area. I later found out the sculptur was the person behind the figure of Christ overlooking Rio de Janeiro.
A must see, highly recommend.

Le Saint-Louis

Reviewed By Elaine S - Lisieux, France

We were driving from Germany to France and decided to stop in this town for lunch. we by chance found this place. I spoke in french, was answered in english shown to a table, we waited and waited snd waited for the menu. Then the guy behind the bar asked the girl to take our order, we just wanted a snack and ordered, omelette and a croque monsieur . Ordered drinks which took another ten mins , then got the wrong drinks. after waiting 25 mins AFTER ordering, I asked the girl politely in french was there a problem, how long would the food be. I was told 5 mins. I had little faith at this point and asked her to confirm the order was in the kitchen, Normalement oui, she replied, Not good enough I need to know the order has been sent to the kitchen, She then started to look uneasy . She checked the tickets and got out her order pad. The guy i. Charge came over .. She said to him I thought you to the order, at this point, I said to her, no you took the order but didnt write it down. By this time we had been over 50 mins, we left , no apology, only a snide comment from the bar guy , have a nice day .. Terrible service
