Sankt Marien Kirche

Reviewed By Carol S - Auckland, New Zealand

Rostock was hit hard in World War II and this beautiful Gothic church was the only one to survive almost unscathed. One of the big attractions is its famous astronomical clock, built in 1472 by Hans Daringer. At the top is a series of doors and at noon and midnight the innermost right door opens and six of the 12 apostles march out to parade around Jesus (Judas is locked out). This is worth seeing as is the altar and beautiful facade of the organ. If you are a church lover, don't miss this one.

Strand Warnemunde

Maybe 100 yards from the water is a hard paved walkway through the sand and the dunes. This makes for a nice waterfront walk to enjoy the ocean breezes without getting bogged down in the sand. There are tourist stands and Takeout along here and most were busy on the very nice day when we were there. Well worth a nice walk.

My husband and I were thrilled to visit this magnificent resort area with private guide Karin Schatzberg from our cruise ship port of Warnemunde. The beach and the boats were beautiful--and interesting shops and restaurants line the quiet street that leads to the beach. We took the Molli Steam Train to get there from Bad Doberan--and that is a treat, too!

Karls Erlebnis-Dorf

We visited Rostock over Christmas to see the family and we took time to go to Karl´s Erlebnis Dorf to visit their new Eiszeit Attraction. A trip on the Orient Express starting in Paris via Vienna, Hungary, Istanbul and the Orient, all depicted in ice. You enter Eiszeit and you arrive in a -10C environment with different rooms where the different cities are brought to life with ice sculptures. In one word: FANTASTIC......ending at the ice bar where you can warm yourself with a vodka or Jägermeister in an ice-glass.....won´t give too much away...go and see!!!
We bought a year ticket (€8.50 pp online) and will definitely go again in the summer....the exhibit is permanent until October 2016

Warnemunde Beach

Even though it was very windy and not that hot, it was a very nice time. Had a long walk and njoyed the sound and the smell of the sea. Lots of seats that you can rent, but not many were still open/available. unfortunately, no public seats/benches on the beach itself, but you can sit on the sand if that does not bother you. I imagine it is a good place for swimming and tanning in summer. There is also a FKK beach (nudist).

We arrived to Warnemunde port on Norwegian cruise line.10 minutes walk from the port to this small and beautiful fishermen town. Alter Strom is long raw of traditional small houses, souvenir shops and cafes, it is a nice place to stroll around. Be sure to have Euro currency because they do not take any other kind of currencies other wise there is only one exchange shop at the railway station and you have to walk there. on this small town you barely can find cars so it is very tranquil place.

We visited Warnemunde for the day and took the opportunity to go to the top of the lighthouse. About 150 steps but the staircase which is narrow and windy is 2 way. A brilliant view from the top and you can see for miles.

Warnemunde Church

The Cathedral is sparse, hard wooden pews, no stained glass. The only adornments are two shipmodels that hang from the ceiling, testimony to the town's history as a port. Also, there's a wonderful carved altar piece that looks quite old, almost medieval.

This museum is rather hidden away and even having the address it was quite hard to find. However it was extremely interesting and informative and well worth a visit.
