Very atmospheric old town and very clean, too. We saw it in winter with all the pretty Christmas lights. The local authorities had done a great job at it. Nice little cafes and great cats and Christmas trees! :)

Again a romanic Cathedral, overdecorated during the baroc period, is undergoing works to bring back the original style

I liked his statue, but my beard is way cooler than his. The rest of the Basilica was very interesting especially the lower part which seems to be Orthodox. The structural features of the columns hold an interesting history, I am sure.

The oldest cave in Puglia did not disappoint. It is a marvel how nature creates masterpieces impossible to replicate. A must see, it is a view that will take your breath away. And the guides are kind, knowledgeable and handsome, what else can you ask for?

Right beneath the main church, this treasure reveals hundreds of years of history, from the time it was part of a Roman empire road, to its becoming an ancient Latin, then Byzantine, then Medieval, Church, before the more modern Church was built over it. What impressed me most was the painstaking, scholarly archeological research done, and the presentation of its discoveries in an excellent lay-out.

Didn't have very high expectations before going to Monopoli, as Polignano a Mare is the place that usually takes all the glory.
But the town made a great impression on us. It's a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, with beautiful white houses with green details and a very pleasant atmosphere. There is an interesting (and very odd) church (Chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio detta del Purgatorio) that I recommend visiting, but other than that, it's great to just stroll through the old center and enjoy it.

A collection of 1,400 beehive buildings built and lived in by peasants.
This is the whole reason to visit this enchanting city. The Trulli UNESCO site is not to be missed. The walk around the village does not take long. Walk through with a guide if you can so you can get the full experience and education concerning the Trulli. Don’t miss the church at the top of the village. It’s worth the walk. There is a wonderful gelato store to refresh on the way down.

There are many churches in Monopoli and unfortunately most of them are closed and only able to be viewed from the outside unless you arrange a tour of the insides ahead of time with a guide. We were lucky that the Cathedral just happened to be open for a private event and we wandered in to visit. It is beautifully restored and worth visiting with a guide if you are in the area.

We visited the Cathedral late in the afternoon, when someone was cleaning and we were unable to visit the clerestory. But we were able to see the enormous, permanent Nativity scene in a side aisle - interesting in that the bambino has been stolen several times and the current incumbent is therefore only a few years old.
