Classified as World Heritage by UNESCO and built at the turn of the 20th century, this romantic architectural complex is comprised of a Palace, a Chapel, and Gardens with grottos.
Predating 1697, this intricately adorned palace of Carvalho Monteiro, received the loving craftsmanship of architect Luigi Manini, whose works include Milan's La Scala. Monteiro, a highly educated scientific capitalist, who graduated Law from University of Combria, was born in Rio de Janeiro, and of Portuguese decent. It was this philanthropist's concept for the "mysterious iconographical program" of this highly unusual property, with loving attention spanning from 1898-1912. The Palace reflects Romanticism of the time, and is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The expansive Gardens are intimate in their layout with unusual and hidden meanings, while the chapel bares Masonic markings. We walked to the Palace from town without much difficulty, although it was a distance. Strolling gives you an intimate peek at what lies ahead, as you pass by the detailed grounds and the ornate Gothic façade comes into view. The Palace was undergoing renovation to the 2nd floor, but the first floor offered such remarkable workmanship in stone and wood that we were altogether satisfied. Having served as the family's summer residence, the Palace was also known as "The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire". This is a highlight and must-see of Sintra!

The cliffs of Cabo da Roca emphasize itheir dramatic placement as the western most point of continental Europe. The cliffs jut out like points and below them are the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. I could imagine 15th and 16th century ships sailing by the Cabo on sea routes never before taken and discovering that there were lands beyond the horizon. Visiting here will be satisfying for the natural beauty around you, but even more so If you are interested in history.

My girlfriend an I had a wonderful tour with Pedro in the National-Park of Sintra/Cascais. Although our skills are different, Pedro chooses the right balance between more technical singletrails and easier doubletrails. On our tour we also had great views at the coach, nice photos and lots of fun. Pedro is a real professionell and we learned a lot. Especially my girlfriend feels much more comfortable with downhill trails now. This day was a highlight in our holiday!

Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, this 18-hole course features gently rolling hills, stately groves of oaks and pines and magnificent views of the Sintra Mountains.
This GC belongs to Penha Longa resort/hotel.
Nice setting in the Sintra Mountains.
Very hilly and a lot of walking between the holes. Golfcar is a good idea, but you have to stay on the path.
Proshop, welcome and "service" were average :|
Course, was muddy and soaking wet in many places :|
(we had to play "winter rules").
Many bunkers.
Tee boxes not all well maintained.
Clubhouse, is very modern and has a nice view, but is too "cool" for our taste, not a great ambiente but "great"/expensive prices for the quality served.

Pina Palace, the UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, presides over Sintra, and is visible from Lisbon on a clear day. Cleverly built into its hilltop perch and one of the world's finest examples of 19th Century Romanticism, it is easy to see why this Palace is considered one of Portugal's "Seven Wonders". Containing Moorish and Manueline style features, Pina Palace was the vision of King Ferdinand II. The furnished Palace abounds with the use of numerous creative bass-relief tiles, intricate plaster, carved stone, a bold exterior palate, forest and distant views, interior pastel plaster walls, and details too numerous to list. This is a masterpiece which should not be missed. Time permitting, the grounds should be explored as well.
A café is located within the Palace above the gift shop; a welcome feature due to the unexpected delay in ultimately reaching this historic destination. Rightfully so, this is an extremely popular attraction. Give yourself ample time for the tourist bus commute up and back; wait-lines are long. Tip: try to visit early in the morning, before the tour buses start arriving. I would recommend an overnight stay to appreciate all that Sintra has to offer.

The "Capuchos Convent" or "Cork Convent" was established in 1560 by Dom Alvaro de Castro, Counsellor of State to King Sebastiao, with the name Convento de Santa Cruz da Serra de Sintra. It is noteworthy for the extreme poverty of its construction, which represents the ideal of the Order of St. Francis of Assisi, and for the extensive use of cork in the protection and decoration of its small spaces.
We were visiting a number of Castles and palaces in the area and purchasing tickets to all of them here earned us a discount. It also meant that when we arrived at the other venues over the next few days we were able to go straight in and avoid any queues. There is much to see here and it is worth having one of the handsets to act as a guide

Sometimes in order to find something interesting you should get lost. Probably that's exactly how the park was discovered. I didn't expect it to be so nice and charming. Really worth visiting. Relaxing zones, peacocks running to and back, flowers, big trees everything makes this place a special one for me.

Lying at the foot of the Sintra hills and facing the Atlantic, this superb beach is not only ideal for wind Surfing but also board Surfing due to the large breakers.
Guincho can be an amazing beach, Winter or Summer as long as there is no wind! The water temperature is very cold but if you happen to be there on a beautiful day in July, it can be very refreshing! The Winter months are good to take your dog and/or children to run and play as you almost have the beach to yourself!
