National Transport Museum

Reviewed By KylieJP1 - Brisbane

We visited Inverell during a recent stay near Glen Innes, went to see the Pioneer Village which was closed due to recent wet weather and ended up in the National Transport Museum which was a surprising little find. The family loved walking around looking at all the cars, there was even a double decker bus that the kids were allowed in. Took lots of photos, worth the visit, must see.

Billabong Blue Sapphire Fossicking Park

Billabong Blue Sapphire Fossicking Park is situated 22kms on the Swanbrook Road from Inverell NSW. A great place to fossick for your very own sapphires, with camping facilities also available. Bring the whole family or come alone, either way you're guaranteed to enjoy your day.

I had been here before (12months ago) but decided to take the kids back, with their uncle ( who had had friends go before also). Great place to look for sapphires without all the digging ( as pile of dirt is supplied ready for excavation). Pleasant man was helpful and gave us all the run down on facilities, equipment and how to look for sapphires and other gems. We only spent about 4 hrs fossicking as we had a long drive home and it was the last day of our holiday but we all came home with quite a collection of various sized sapphires and other gems. There are toilets, and a new undercover picnic table area for having a break. Small lidded containers for placing gems in are difficult to open and eventually crack, so perhaps thought could be put into a different style ( screw lid would be preferable and easier especially for the kids). Great place and worth the entry fee. You certainly get dusty so wear old clothing and good shoes, hat & sunscreen and bottled water.

We did a day trip to check out Copeton. We didn't do any water activities but enjoyed driving around seeing the wildlife, having a relaxed fun game of golf and the splash park was awesome. We look forward to making it a regular outing. ❤

Seven Oaks Fossicking

Reviewed By JGDynamo - Halifax Region, Canada

We decided to try our hands at fossicking for sapphire in Inverell, the Sapphire Capital of Australia. The Seven (7) Oaks Fossicking was recommended to us by a friend who is friends with the owners and likes to send business their way. It’s a short drive out of town but really nice setting with great instruction and all the gear you need to search for your own sapphires. We spent an hour or so fossicking and found a few tiny sapphires and assorted shiny bits of stuff (zirconia?), our friend brought up some stuff for a bbq and we enjoyed a nice lunch there too. After our lunch we did a bit more fossicking and can see how it would become engrossing looking for the next sapphire or whatever you were looking for. Very nice fossicking set up, great area and we will come back again next time and maybe do some camping and fossicking to make our fortunes haha

Inverell art gallery

Reviewed By Nmsj1957 - Bathurst, Australia

Visited on a day when the Hanging Committee was debating the layout of the next exhibit. The lovely lady on the front counter apologised for the melee and personally showed us around those areas we could view. Like most galleries, the works range from the wonderful to the sublime. I have given a rating of 'excellent' not for what we could see today, but for the enthusiasm of all the volunteers to maintain what appears to be a remarkable collection in a small NSW town. The local council is also to be applauded for the support of regional artists. Entry is by donation and is worth an hour to two when in Inverell.

Call in at the Olive Grove for a tasting and was surprised with the variety on offer.
Olives, jams and conserves, chilli sauces and of course Olive Oil both plain and flavour infused. Lovely, generous, friendly staff. We had a great time there. Thank you very much. I recommend a visit.
