Fondi (Latin: Fundi) is a city and comune in the province of Latina, Lazio, central Italy, halfway between Rome and Naples. Before the construction of the highway between the latter cities in the late 1950s, Fondi had been an important settlement on the Roman Via Appia, which was the main connection from Rome to much of southern Italy.

We cycled down via appia antica. Beautiful day with lots of Sunshine. First 8 kilometers is like cycling in an open air museum. Amazing to see the original road. You can almost feel the old romans riding horseback towards Rome :-). Last 8 km is not worth the ride. Surely worth the visit outside of the busy centre of the city.
Catacombs are supposedly quite nice as well but we didn't visit them.

We visited the castle with friends who live in Fondi. As our friend speaks Italian he translated the explanations from a lovely volunteer guide about finds from the local area. This included a wonderful sarcophagus which depicted both Christian and Pagan symbols.
The views from the top were great and the roofs of Fondi opened up before us.
If you don't speak or understand Italian then it's probably not going to be much fun other than to get the views and look at the artefacts but it was cheap entry and we enjoyed our time.

One of those rare places in Italy where there are almost no tourists We were the only 3 people there on the day and it really made us appreciate the peaceful ambience of the Monastero. Some wonderful old affresco paintings still visible in one of the chapels. Beautifully renovated.

Despite down pouring rain, had a wonderful dinner at this farm. We drove in through fields of eggplants and artichokes. A solid house red wine and hors d'oeuvres were served in the old stable made from volcanic rock. Fantastic kitchen served one of the best bruschettas I've ever tasted, plus other delicacies. I had a vegan dinner by special request. First course..two pastas...linguine with fresh lemon juice and parsley, and a small ziti with sauteed zucchini. Main dish was grilled eggplant with a side of heavenly onions. Finally a lemon sorbet. The Contessa appears in and out making sure we were happy!!! There are beautiful views if not raining. Superb dining.

We visited the factory site slightly out of town, were hoping to get some burata but they had run out - we got 4 fabulous balls of fresh mozzarella and 8 little bocconcini, all from buffalo milk. They were just as they should be...fresh and perfect texture. Recommended!

Centrale, ben tenuta e ben frequentata. Sempre piena di gente, e col viale prospiciente pieno di negozi, rappresenta un must per chi visita questo ridente paese

This is closed to the public gates are locked so you can not get in to see it. You can see it from the outside but not in its full light. I have been in on previous trips and it is a great place.

Bisogna vederla!
