10 Things to Do in Biarritz That You Shouldn't Miss

November 2, 2017 Timmy Ribble

A stylish beach town on France’s southwestern coast, Biarritz was once the vacation spot for nobility and is now Europe’s surfing capital. It’s experienced a tourist renaissance—summers are busy. Biarritz lacks the Riviera’s glitz, but you’ll see affluent vacationers in designer gear and surfers in flip-flops, and hear French, Spanish and Basque. The Grande Plage is the center of the action. Behind it, visit the restored, Art Deco casino and wander the streets down to the old port to the west.

Rocher de la Vierge

Although it was already mid-October, we spent a beautiful sunny and warm day in Biarrtiz. One of the main attractions was Le Rocher de la Vierge and the lovely walk along the coast to find it. We learned that the steel structure used as base for the board walk towards the cliff was built by Gustave Eiffel, so another point of reference as such. It is the place to spend some time in the open and become part of this wonderful place. We have created some memories to cherish when thinking back about this visit.

It is quite small, no shop on site or history of the lighthouse provided. There is a small food truck serving food and beverages and the views back into the city are fantastic on a nice clear day.

If you like your fish and seafood walk down to the port and take a seat at one of the little restaurants. The locals come down here en masse and everywhere seemed busy when we went past on a sunny Friday lunchtime! An interesting way to mix with the locals

Port Vieux Beach

Reviewed By Nathaly C - Main Beach, Australia

This used to be my childhood beach. Very quaint and safe nested between rocks.
On low tide perfect for parents with children as it offers rock pools.
Ideal for little ones with a bucket and a net. Spend hours there.
Convenient with cafes etc for lunch and reasonably easy access if you can climb up and down. Public parking not too far either. If you are visiting in summer it will be a bit more challenging as popular, parking an issue and people on the beach. Still worth a detour.
You can walk there from town.

This collection, said to be the second in quality in France (after the Musee Guimet in Paris) was disappointing as the finest pieces are not featured. Too many objects are displayed and cases seemed sometimes more like open storage than a museum installation. My husband...MoreThank you very much for your comment which gives us good advices. We will try our best to improve.

Chapelle Imperiale

Reviewed By RECENTVIEWPOINT - Australia

This little gem of a Chapel was commissioned by Empress Eugenie who was married to Napoleon 3rd.
It has some mosaics reminiscent of Alhambra in Spain, Byzantine and Roman architecture and decorations.
We happily paid for the tour because there was a Mexican connection to the black Virgin of Guadalupe. Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful.
You need to be there at 2.30 on a Thursday or Saturday in June.

Eglise Alexandre Newsky

Reviewed By Oliver S - New York City, New York

Dating from the 19th Century, the church is now in a very sad state of dilapidation, with the paint peeling off the walls and everything looking old and worn out. It may have been beautiful once upon a time but it's difficult to see it now. There are some interesting icons.
