A quick lunch as we toured the island. I had some very good meat soup and husband had a ham and cheese Sandwich. We also shared morcilla, local sausage and local cheese. A plain simple and satisfying lunch, with good coffee.

We really found no restaurants in the Azores that were 'gourmet', and Santa Maria is probably behind some other Islands. Paquete is a rather curious 'boat shaped' building right beside the beach. Very friendly service, and the food was more than acceptably good. Very good location and well used by locals. Recommended.

Ate here yesterday with the wife. We ordered the pepperoni pizza with extra mushrooms and also had 4 super boks beers, total bill game to 14 euro.
Pizza was very tasty with a very good crust. The only put off was all the smokers.
We sat on the patio unsure if smoking is allowed inside.
Server was very good and pleasant.

Not as small as imaginable but warm as needed . Favoring charcoal cooking simultaneously with an election wine cellar, brings out in every moment excellence and fine care in take-away and catering service.
This is not a tourist place, at least we were the only non-domestic tourists. The waitress did not speak English, but we managed with speaking Spanish and her replies in Portuguese. We had the bread/cheese/pé starter and then the swordfish and the squids. Especially the squids, which came with a sauce and potatoes (not really grilled as described), were delicious!
Great value, too.

this place is actually part of a sports club and has a (smoker's ) bar next door... 4 ladies are running this business, the waitresses are fast and sufficient (with limited english) and the 2 lady chefs prepare meals which you won't forget.
We had a soup, cheese from Sao Jorge, mixed started (sausages) and 2 main meat dishes and 1 jarro grande vinho tinto for 29€ all together. Portuguese food for local prices, no tourist trap at all.
My recommendation for this island!

There were several times we went to Mascote Caffe this year. Once the homemade ice cream, the famous "Prego à Mascote" or the cheese board with ham and Meloa de Santa Maria. A fruit that has recently received European certification.
The Mascote Caffe, after several years closed, was reopened by the grandchildren of the original owner. There is a lot of history and symbolism in this small spot at Vila do Porto.
I do not know if its going to be next year, but when i return to the island, count me and my family.

The fish was amazing. It seemed as if it had just been caught. The cooking was excellent. The beer/wine were great. The location is great. So was the ambience. Service was superb.

Although this restaurant is a part of Hotel Santa Maria, it is also open to the general public. Me and my partner decided to have lunch there, imagining that other places would be closed at 2pm on a Sunday.
It all started with the weird feeling that there was no waiter in the room. But one did show up after a while and told us: "Don't despair, I'll just pick up the orders from that other table." Then she came back to ask our dishes, and once again to ask for our beverages. Then a third time she came and gave me a beer explaining that it was not the local beer that I had asked...
The flowers at our table were showing signs of very old age and there was even a spider making webs between the leafs.
Finally, when the food came, my meat tasted awful with the distinctive aroma of frozen beef. My partner hoping to have nice vegetarian food was presented to a plate of overcooked fusilli with some clunky mixed frozen vegetables that were barely cooked, while the whole plate looked greasy and tasted like the beef on my plate.
I liked nothing at this restaurant except for the young girl at the front desk who did her best to help us despite the obvious defects on her training.
There is something definitely wrong with this restaurant and it feels like it's definitely manager related.

I met the owner in the central pub in Vila and she invited me over so.I thought why not after coming down the trail from Santa Espirito. The shrimp was fantastic as was the 4 fish stew with potatoes and rice. Wholesome food and dad's recipe which hit the spot. All washed down with a couple of large beers and a wine to go.
Aida the owner sat down with me and we chewed the fat of travel and fun times. Plus she organised transport back to Vila. A pleasant couple of hours for 20 euros. Result!
