Where to Eat in Moncton: The Best Restaurants and Bars

March 8, 2018 Kaleigh Reichenbach

New Brunswick's transportation hub is vibrant Moncton, one of the country's fastest growing cities and a community steeped in history. Its storied past is brought to life in its many cultural institutions and museums, from the Acadian Museum to Le Centre Culturel Aberdeen. The city's largest green space, Centennial Park, includes many attractions and activities, from hiking and skiing trails to an artificial beach to an aerial treetop obstacle course and zip line.

Little Louis' Oyster Bar

Reviewed By iyeh - Vancouver, Canada

First time here with my family on a Maritimes adventure. Decided to come here based on all the excellent reviews. However, we were a bit disappointed overall.
I had made the reservation a week prior to coming and the person who took my reservation said that he had room for 4 at 7pm, and made it sound like they were booked up until that time. I obliged, and when we came to the restaurant, it was almost empty! There were 4 other tables of parties from 2-3 people. No matter... we'll just have more attentive service (or so I thought).
Waters and the ordering were fine. Amuse bouche and bread came at a decent time as well. However, the service became a let down soon after.
Our table only ordered one appetizer (oyster and lobster chowder), and it came about 20 minutes after the bread. Afterwards, our 4 entrees didn't come until about 20 minutes later. Now, I've never worked in the restaurant business, but 4 entrees, 50 minutes after we ordered with 4 or 5 other tables present (who had already received their food), seemed like a long time for me.
I could forgive the wait for the food if our server gave us regular updates, offered more bread, or refilled waters... but she gave us one update that the chef was applying "finishing touches", which took about 15 more minutes after that update.
When the food finally arrived, my surf and turf wasn't exactly worth the 58 dollars in my opinion. The lobster was actually very delicious, but I was disappointed at my steak as it wasn't tender, and half of the steak was over cooked to my liking.
We had also ordered 2 orders of the pasta, and the feedback at the table was that again, the lobster was well done, but the pasta wasn't anything to write home about.
I think the service, coupled with the average tasting food made my experience not as great as the other reviews. Needless to say, we didn't stay for dessert.

We have been frequenting Calactus for over 10 years now and they have maintained the same high quality food, friendly service and cozy atmosphere. We are especially impressed with their kid friendly service. Some of our favorite items on the menu are their pakoras which we get as a starter. Their lemon ginger tea is incredible and they serve great coffee. There isn't a single bad dish on the menu but we love the big mark burger, the burrito and their pizzas and salads.

Extensive wine list. Amuse bouche crab pate was okay. Bread basket was disappointing. Good table side tartar, mediocre scallop appetizer, excellent table side Caesar salad which was the best Caesar salad we've ever had, palate cleanser cranberry granita was too sweet, very good cod well cooked with spinach and asparagus which were a touch too salty, excellent steak (possibly the best) with great crust and flavour and very good side garlic spinach, great table side banana flambe with toasted almonds. Table side service by Frederico made the night special and memorable. Ambiance was very nice, intimate, interesting maritime artifacts, gas lamps, etc. Old school in the best way.

Stopped in with a friend from Halifax and enjoyed the experience again. Surprised it was not real busy on a Thursday at noon. Had a couple of their red beer that I like. ( not driving). Split a veggie pizza that was good for 2 and was excellent tasting and $13. Service was ok but had to remind waitress that she forgot my second beer even though not busy.

Tony's Bistro & Patisserie

Since 2007 Tony's has been serving New Brunswick's finest French pastries, baked goods, and gourmet sandwiches. Due to increasing demand, we have recently expanded to include a full evening menu, including a selection of local and imported beers and wines. We are now opened in the evenings - stop in and see us tonight!

Reviewed By PookyCake - Victoria, Canada

Because it was only a few minutes’ drive from Romeo LeBlanc airport, Tony’s Bistro and Patisserie was our first stop upon landing in Moncton at mid-afternoon. We were both curious and excited to try this place after Reading all of the rave reviews. The first thing we noticed upon walking in was the tasteful display of cakes and pastries at the front counter. After seeing this – and everything that it contained – we knew we’d have to, at minimum, get something “to go.” In any event, there was no wait for a table because we’d arrived just before 2PM and so had managed to avoid the lunch-hour rush.
Once we were seated we were given the lunch menu. The first thing that struck me about them? It’s a small and compact menu, but that’s something I covet and think very highly of because it tells me that what is done here is done very well. If the menu wasn’t executed properly, then this restaurant wouldn’t last long but, as we know, it’s grown exponentially over the last decade and a half from its humble beginnings as a two-seater pastry shop to the 40+ seat bistro it is now; so, the chef has clearly been doing something right. For lunch, my partner and I shared the crab cakes and I had the lobster croissant with daily soup.
Tony’s Bistro prides itself on making everything in-house. This ensures freshness and a certain standard of quality that you don’t necessarily get in all eateries. And we were certainly able to taste this freshness. Our crab cakes, which were made with New Brunswick snow crab, were very nicely done. There was no pretentious presentation to be had here – just a simple plate with two crab cakes laid out in the centre and two different dipping sauces on the plate’s periphery. The emphasis was on the cakes themselves, which carried with them the perfect ratio of crab meat to “filler;” that is to say, no one particular item overpowered the other, which is how a good crab cake should be. Likewise, my lobster croissant was spot on. The croissant was perfectly made, crispy and light on the outside and buttery inside – the perfect admix of lobster and bread. The fresh slaw that sat atop the lobster worked as the perfect complement with the flaky croissant and fresh lobster meat, adding a bit more crisp and texture. We were very pleased and satisfied with our lunch choice!
As my partner and I departed, we made sure to get a couple of treats from the dessert display case: A few cookies and a couple of royale bars. The cookies were nice, but the royale bars deserve special mention. My partner and I usually aren’t big fans of chocolate – at least not in any significant sense – but these royale bars. . .oh my! So smooth and full of flavour! These were dangerously good. So much so, in fact, that we made it a point to return here later to pick up a couple more, plus their signature sugar tarts (also very good). It’s a good thing that we don’t live in Moncton; otherwise we’d probably be about 600lbs now from eating those AMAZING royale bars!
FOOD: 5/5
SERVICE: 4.5/5
VALUE: 5/5
RECOMMENDATION: Tony’s Bistro and Patisserie brings a “little taste of France to Atlantic Canada.” All of the food is prepared fresh and it shows. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here and, what’s more, found the desserts to be absolutely divine. If visiting Moncton then you must come here for lunch and you MUST save room for dessert! The sugar tarts are great and the royale bars are out of this world!

We stopped here for a later dinner after a day of hiking. We were happy with the selection and the food was reasonably priced. The drink prices were amazing with glasses of wine for less than $5 (not the best wine I've ever had but that's alright!) I had the seafood linguini which was good - the scallops were the best part. My husband had the nachos and I thought the addition of BBQ sauce was a great touch. The Caesar salad was also nice and had real bacon on it. Overall a pretty good meal at a reasonable price.

We were invited here by friends and hoped the experience would be good with a smaller group. Sadly it wasn't.
Whilst the server was efficient and polite she just didn't seem to be interested or engaged.
I ordered a baseball steak to be cooked medium rare. When it arrived it was burnt, and not just charred but very, very burnt, and it tasted very, very burnt too. I didn't like to complain because of my friends, and the server didn't ask why it was barely eaten. The baked potato was average at best, and the vegetable poor. O
