We ate at the restaurant in town. Even though it was very crowded, the service was excellent. We shared a bunch of appetizers, a few pitchers of passion fruit juice, and several different main courses. My favorite was trout in acuyo sauce. The acuyo plant (also called hoja santa) besides having medicinal purposes is very tasty. You can wrap fish or tamales in it or make a sauce or mole. The salsa de acuyo tastes similar to anise, black pepper, mint, and tarragon, all in one aromatic leaf. I see that there is also a Cabana del Tio Yeyo in the countryside, which I will definitely try when I return to this region.

The service is excellent and friendly. The restaurant is very spacious with multiple rooms and even has a playroom for kids. The prices are very reasonable. My issue is that the food isn't that good. While the Chef's Salad was excellent, my Filete Mignon was not and was over-cooked and drowned in a very greasy gravy. The empanadas were greasy and under-cooked. It's a shame the food is sub-standard as this restaurant has very nice staff.

Restaurante Casa Bonilla, la esquina mas famosa de Coatepec, Veracruz. Una tradicion desde 1939. Especialidades del mar y langostinos.Casa Bonilla Restaurant, the most famous square in Coatepec, Veracruz. A great seafood tradition since 1939.
When I ordered a full portion of Camarrones al mojo de ajo (shrimp broiled in butter and garlic,) the waiter suggested I choose a half order. I was hungry and hadn't eaten in 18 hours so I said, no I'd like the full portion. He then suggested half al mojo and half just in butter to compare. I said OK and ordered my favorite beer to go along. Shortly two plates arrived each with about 15 of the jumboest shrimp I'd ever seen. Fresh and cooked to perfection.
Looking around at the tables near me, I could see everyone was enjoying themselves.

International restaurant with wine, drinks, coffee and digestive Chef specialties Tomas Dominguez, with over 18 years in the profession.
I think cafe Santa Cruz was the nicest surprise in Coatepec, I love great food and this is what you get. The food was delicious, highest quality, the chef was very attentive. Everything that we tried was so good and so original, this restaurant could be anywhere in the world and be on the top. The dessert (cheese cake cream with green and red pepper jelly was so out of this world! Congratulations for creating this culinary experience!

If you are looking for a place in which every single detail of the creation of a cup of coffee is taken care of with the utmost detail and also have a nice, honest, profound chat with a unique person (in Spanish), Avelino is not only the person but the place to go.
Avelino's heart and mind are immersed in the coffee, the coffee plantations, the coffee beans, the aromas, the colors, textures, flavors, and anything in between. Please don't expect a commercial joint where frappuccinos are sold with your name written on a cardboard cup... but an enigmatic scenario that requires respect, kind intention, curiosity, and friendliness, all of which you'll receive back from this straightforward, honest, poet of the cafeto.
"Olores santos del monte
En una tibia humedad
Colmada de silencios
Anuncian la floración del café.
El cafetal se aroma con lágrimas blanquecinas
Y el eco de la Barranca se inunda de sollozos peregrinos…"

Coatepec is a magical town located near the city of Xalapa, capital of the state of Veracruz.
It is certainly a beautiful, endearing, picturesque town. Many foreigners have chosen to make it their home due to these attractive characteristics. I guess the owners of this restaurant fell in love with Coatepec and decided to stay there and with them brought along some of the best cuisine from Central, South America and the Caribbean plus the wonderful and joyful music from all these areas making up for the a marvelous mix of music and excellent food that is inevitably winning.
Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy this bistro, I'm pretty sure you'll thank me for the recommendation. (one little inconvenience: cash only, but it's not going to cost you much)

I loved the view, sorrounded by the Mountains and the nature... tasty seasoning of the trout, I had one in Salsa de Mango because I love the combination from sweet and salty, my partner had Chilpetin Trout, both were delicious... I also had shrimp cocktail, taste was good but shrimp was not fresh at all...what I did not like very much was the condition of the road, I think the owner could invest a little to enhance the road.
