Seeing and touring these 5000 year old ruins was an amazing and awesome experience. Only some of the many pyramids have been excavated from the mounds of sand under which their creators hid them. The site is enormous, but a tour of the excavated area (about 13 pyramids) takes only around 2 hours. Do understand that these are 5000 year old ruins and moderate your expectations thusly. Nothing is completely intact and there are no artifacts on display. There are two ways to see Caral. One is to do a day trip from Lima with a tour group, three hours there and three hours back! Another way (what we did) is to bus to Barranca and stay overnight in a hotel there for a few nights. The Hotel Chavin arranged for a driver to take us to Caral, wait for us, and then drive us back to Barranca for 110 soles. You must hire a Spanish guide when you get there as they do not let anybody in to the ruins unsupervised and there are no English guides. We arrived at the gates at about 11:00 and managed to hookup with a small tour group from Lima. Their English speaking Peruvian guide was very happy to add us to his group and of course we gave him a good tip for doing so. This was happenstance for us, and maybe it would work again, but if not you can read all about Caral online before you go. Wear sunscreen, shorts, good walking shoes and a hat.

El Aspero is an overlooked archaeological tourist gem. When I came there with my pals to see the site, we were floored by HOW deserted the place was, especially compared to The Sacred City of Caral. The tour guide was helpful and patient with us while we argued about dumb sciency archaeological theories in English, took his time with explaining the excellent museum, and toured us across the site, which is SUPER cool and only needs more people to know about it. If you are interested in ancient history, modern heritage, and like to travel off the beaten path, head to Aspero.
