It is a nice, small beach without services, one can take a walk, although the promenande is narrow in some part, especially close to a restaurant that invades almost all with tables. One can take a walk on the rocky Promenade ("rambla"). Parking is only possible at the parking lot close to the beach. One-two hour should be enough.

The good: nice houses, great and long beach, very safe, family oriented, no resorts, just a couple of restaurants and coffee shops.
The bad: many teenagers walking in the streets until very late, some of them drinking and laughing. Nothing dangerous but for sure annoying. This place is where many well known and rich families have their weekend houses.
The police doesn't care, the parents less.
Sad spectacle for a beautiful place

Make time to walk La Rambla and take in the many views of the ocean. While rock hoping is fun, be very wary as the surf does come up unexpectedly and with great force.

Isla Los Pinguinos, as well as Zapallar as a whole, are a nice sight. However, I enjoyed more the drive on the coast rather than Zapallar itself. I was expecting fantastic vacation houses, nice little restaurants on the coast, and nice Beaches, but we hardly found any.

We drove up the coast from Valparaiso and discovered the absolutely beautiful beach towns of Cachagua and Zapallar. Since it was April, we had the Beaches all to ourselves--including a perfect lunch spot on the beach in Zapallar serving fantastic fresh seafood and some of the best white wines we had from the Casablanca valley. The hills are dotted with gorgeous homes and there stone walkways along the beach the snake past beautiful nature reserves--including the Penguin colony of Isla de Los Pinguinos a few hundred feet from the beach in Cachagua. You can get more perfect beach towns.

It seems Valéry was writing about this place when composing his famous poem. Right by the sea, on a beautiful rocky coast, with waves slashing below, cypress trees, and also a beloved family place, you can see that. Some modern "improvements" off the mark, though.
