The original abbey was established by King Andras I in the 11th century.
No, this is not "just another church". The size, architecture, and quality statues in this small village in this out-of-the way place are truly awesome. A guided tour to help understand all the nuances and history are in order - I don't believe I can do it justice with mere words. Do make the effort, even if it is a bit out of your way.

As we drove from Budapest to Slovenia, decided to take a detour to see the lake & so happy we did as it is beautiful. The colour is lovely, and it is large allowing for a lot of activities slong the shore & by boat.
Numerous accommodation spots along the coast from camping to hotels, various food options from takeaway to dine in, & hire options including boats & bikes.
A popular holiday & cycling option. Lovely! We could easily go back & spend a few days relaxing.

Recommended for all ages, this entertainment options, ranging from 5 years of age. Long tracks of varying difficulty degrees. The team is usually helpful, but there were a few half-hearted fellow as well. Team training is also suitable. I think it is a bit too overpriced, poor value for money price. Restaurant also weak.

In Hungary if someone would like to visit the Balaton lake, the most representative place with the greatest view is Tihany. Basically the little town is on a half island inside the Balaton, this ensures its extraordinary perspective. If you climb up even to the benedictine monastery "Tihany Abbey", that is guaranteed you will always remember to the Balaton from that view. It is worth to try also the "Tihany echo", which is generated by the north side of the huge building of abbey

It is said that the waters have many medicinal properties. I can not comment on this. However, on tasting the water it was obvious that there were various minerals in the water. Many people over the years could not all be wrong about it's healthy attributes.

We was at Palinka Wellness for tasting and the owner advise to us the look-out tower. Its a short trip (but not only 300m) from parking place to the top and there is a nice view to the Balaton. Worth to visit, mainly if you were on a tasting to clear your head. There is a bufet open during the weekends.

After Matrafured, Budapest and Heviz, the unique service of the High-Tech Sports Base - the segway tour - is now available in Balatonfured too. The tour on this fantastic vehicle offers an unforgettable experience for children, adults, the young, the elderly, couples, families and friends alike. Other exciting programmes available!
It was a good and awesome activity. I've been here with my family and they enjoyed. I've never tried segway before, and as I thought, it was super. You can control it easily. The leader speaks clearly, and he is very helpful. I hardly recommend this activity.

Really cool festival, cheap prices, good weather, nice side attractions. Good DJs and a real summer feeling. Definitively recommended to go to, especially in a big group! It's also a nice plus that there are also afterparties after midnight at which you can party outside. :) Also perfect to combine it with a visit to Budapest and take the train from there.

Tihany is perched on a hill and represents a very kitch and touristy "old" Hungarian village. Crammed with eateries and paprika shops the prices are sharp and access is by the road train from the harbour. Tour buses roll in around 11am so be warned it can get very busy. There are superb ceramic shops to the north end of town (keep walking with the Cathedral on your right)
Another way there is to catch bus 4 from Balatonfured which runs every hour from bus stop number 3 in front of the railway station. Fares 600 forints and a 7km walk back if so inspired.
Be careful where you get off. The bus runs past the port with the driver announcing "Tihany" and you will have to then buy a road train ticket. However the bus route then loops back on itself going up the hill to the village itself. Alight at the Cathedral steps or simply ask for " centrum".
