What to do and see in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands: The Best Places and Tips

October 29, 2017 Jacquiline Delozier

Like all of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas has plenty of opportunities to lounge on the beach, splash in the sea, or amp it up with watersports. It also boasts a bountiful duty-free shopping scene – just be prepared to brave the cruise ship crowds. Charlotte Amalie swells with Danish colonial architecture and pirate legend. Shiver ye timbers at Blackbeard’s Castle, then work up an appetite by climbing the historic 99 Steps, constructed from the ballast bricks of 18th century Danish ships.

Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden

We are open. Phantasea reopened on Nov. 10, 2017. We are open from 9:00 - 5:00, Fri, Sat, Sun, holidays, and by special appointment. The two acre garden is as beautiful as ever with blooming orchids, bromeliads, lilies, palms, and more. Outstanding views from Magens Bay to Tortola, St. John and the cruise ship harbor. Come and relax in the calming serenity of nature as lizards scurry about and butterflies and birds fly throughout the garden. Stop and rest in our Balinese gazebo or at our other Seating areas. Visit our resident wildlife - parrots, tortoises, peacocks and chickens - and learn about the garden plants and inhabitants with our interpretive signs. Approx. 45 minutes - one hour average time to visit. Great for children and families. Cold water and tropical juices for sale. Cash and credit cards accepted. Easy to find, just follow the signs posted along the roadways with the bright pink flowers.

This is primarily a collection of epiphytes, and the are a lot of beautiful orchids and other plants in a lush tropical forest atmosphere. However, there are a few dead ends on the pathway with" under construction " signs. Right now I would say an hour is enough to take it in. There are some places to stop and sit, and is it would be a pleasant place to just sit and enjoy the plants and peaceful surroundings. I think that there is a lot of potential, but work is needed to maximize that potential.

After the hurricane the hotel hasn't opened yet so the beach was very quiet. We launched kayaks from Lindquist Beach so didn't spend much time there. Also it is near the airport, mainly small plains and not many at that but there are a few larger planes in the mid-late afternoon

St. Thomas Synagogue

A well known early colonial Synagogue in Dutch style. Both a museum and an active Synagogue according to the reform movement rites. The sand covered floor came as quite a surprise!
The Synagogue is within easy walking distance of the cruise terminal although could be challenging on a hot day as up a steep hill. Our ship was visible from the foyer.

Water Island

The fourth largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, this quiet 492-acre island, located in Charlotte Amalie harbor, beckons those who want to stroll its Beaches, bike amid its green hills, and view birds, iguana, turtles and other wildlife that make this lovely paradise their home.

Ten minute and ten dollar (round trip per person. Cash only) is quick and easy taking off from crown bay marina in front of tickles restaurant. The captain gives you a punched card as a receipt for trip paid and it has the schedule of water taxi times for return trip. Very pretty ride over. Dock hovers over the prettiest greenish teal waters. There is a golf cart rental place just up the hill (was closed for the month while we were there) but an open safari type truck picks u up for free (tips appreciated) and drives u around a rocky path to honeymoon beach. To the left is dinghys and to the right is Heidi's. We chose the left hand side, used their chairs and umbrellas and drank and ate most of the day. It was fun. I would recommend checking it out but if you have to choose between this site and say PRISTINE trunk bay on St. John's then 1000% choose trunk bay or maho and swim with huge turtles instead. We left around 4 or 4:30 w an overloaded safari back to the dock where a long long line formed to get on the water taxi back to the main land. By coast guard law they could only take 25 ppl and we were #24 and #25 in line and wouldn't let us go together. So we waited for 15 minutes until the captain could make a return trip to pick the rest of us up (I still don't think everyone fit until the third full roundtrip)

Magens Bay

Hailed as one of the world's most beautiful, this breathtaking bay along St. Thomas' rugged north coast is ideal for swimming and snorkeling with all the conveniences of parking, lifeguards, equipment rental, Freshwater showers, restaurants and bars.

Reviewed By LoveLakeoftheWoods - Toronto, Canada

Magens Bay is just simply awesome. If you take a transportation run from the port, up to the Daiquiri lookout you will get a birds eye view of the beach. You are then about a 20 minute ride down to the wonderful sands of Magen’s Bay. There is a bar/restaurant and boutique on site. Chairs available for rent and the waters are wonderful.

Sapphire Beach

A favorite of windsurfers, the beach has fine white sand and beautiful views of St. John and offshore cays, and offers excellent snorkeling at the reef to the east, near Pettyklip Point.

Reviewed By LtColRiley - Rockwall, Texas

We opted for Sapphire Beach over Megan's Bay on March 12, 2018 while on a cruise, because Megan's Bay is still not 100% recovered from the 2017 hurricane damage. Sapphire Beach was open for business -- beautiful blue water, soft white sand, water sports and a bar and restaurant to keep you happy. We had a great time, and we chatted with folks who went to Megan's Bay and were disappointed because (a) it was crowded as usual, but (b) also is not fully operational with activities, food and drinks.
