Senja National Tourist Route

Reviewed By Andrea M - Belfast, United Kingdom

All along this fantastic national road the scenery was stunning the first time we did it, with the evening sun hanging low. We stopped plenty of times to take pictures and during the whole trip where completely absorbed by the scenery. The day after, when we returned back trough the same road, it was raining. I must say that I wouldn't have tough much of it if I had seen it with the rain first... So if you have an option try to do the trip on a sunny day.

Senja Husky Adventure

Senja Husky Adventure is a family run dog sled kennel located on Norway’s second largest island, above the arctic circle. From our camp we offer exciting activities with our friendly Siberian Huskies all year round.

Booked in here as it seemed to be the only place on Senja offering husky trips. Great day out! The owner was really friendly, really relaxed and the whole day went really well. We explored some new trails with the dogs over varied terrain, through the woods, up hills, over lakes...the dogs were wonderful and very well behaved, thy love cuddles too! Couldn’t really have asked for more. We were the only people booked in that day so pretty much had our own private husky adventure. Was also quite a bit cheaper than some of the other ones I investigated around Tromsø area. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this.

Hamn i Senja

Hamn i Senja is a perfect starting point to explore the adventure island of Senja. We offer daily departures of activities, ranging from sightseeing tours in the fjord to kayak excursions and fishing trips. We also have boats, kayaks and other gear for rental for those who like to explore on their own. In winter, hundreds of whales pass by the coast and we offer whale watching departures daily in January.

We spontaneously decided to spend a night at the resort and were absolutely blown away by the fantastic location when we got there. The fact that we received a free upgrade (because the keys to our room couldn't be found) obviously added to our excitement.
However what followed after that was a but of a disappointment, I have to a admit. The room we got was right above the hot tub which was filled with a group of beer-drinking and singing young men. Furthermore there was a very noisy truck/forklift reversing back and forth for at least an hour. When the men eventually got out of the hot tub, the very noisy pump kept rattling and would have done so all night had I not asked reception to turn it off. Also, works/movements/reversing cats started being very noisy from around 7 the next morning.
The restaurant in my opinion needs some thought to be put into. Again, fantastic location right by the harbour basin but unfortunately not more that mediocre food and service. Stockfish ravioli covered in 2cm of cheese and fish soup very heavy. Both not necessarily 0bad but could be done better. Service was very friendly but you could tell staff is fairly untrained and had to ask questions over and over.
Same story with breakfast - not necessarily terrible but not very inspired and made with love. I get it's a remote location and things might be harder to get hold of. But if you decide to offer a limited selection, the quality should be better.
All in all I think the place has much more potential given the brilliant location, the great inventory and the very friendly staff. It's the details that don't match the fairly substantial price point.

Nothing can compare to a view like this but what makes it so special is the way you approach the beach opposite Tungeneset on a beautifully crafted Siberian larch walkway. A wonderfully Norwegian touch! On our visit the rain had just stopped and the sun came out- we were lucky!

Bergsbotn

Reviewed By Glyn Y - Jersey, Channel Islands

After crossing from the Mainland over the bridge, Senja looks little different. Drive across to the west and discover the stunning fjords and coast. The viewpoint at Bergsbotn is almost worth the drive alone. Then further along the coast is Tungeneset which will complete the sightseeing! After that we watched black guillemots and got the ferry from Botnhamn and sailed through flocks of puffins back to Brensholmen. A beautiful day.

A charming experience, trolls of all sizes and ages - scary ones and sweet ones, something for both children and adults. The tickets are a little pricy, but then again, being so far away from everything they need to earn a bit. There's a nice cafe close by, which I loved

Anders is a passionate and great tour guide. He showed us how deep the Norwegians are in love with nature. It was a phenomena experience to be able to see the Northern light, which is different from most trips, where you just buy entrance tickets and are guaranteed to see whatsoever. We had to be extremely patient while waiting to see the Northern light. It definitely takes luck to be able to spot the light, because there are times when clouds are covering the light, or times when the sky is clear, but nothing is showing. We came for three days, and finally saw the Northern light on the last day. Although it wasnt the prettiest nor completed light, our dream actually came true. I really recommend this place, because its owner is Anders, who is so sincere and nice. He loves Northern lights, and hoped everyone from all around the world to join him, in his journey to experience the joy and excitement from observing the Northern light. There are many aurora tours that bring tourists to chase after the Northern light with riding a bus or van. But at this place, we can relax, stay warm and comfortable while waiting for the Northern light to appear in a Glass House. This is a great experience and the aurora is REAL. It is best if you can stay for at least 4 days to have a higher chance to see the aurora. We visited this place on 12/9/2017-15/9/2017.
