The Acquario di Genova was built on the occasion of the Expo ’92, a celebration of the fifth centenary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus, with the intention of restructuring and enhancing an area full of history and traditions, located in the heart of Genoa’s historic centre, the Porto Antico (the old port). It’s the biggest aquarium in Europe.
We found the whole experience rather average for the price of the ticket. 3 of the Exhibitions we specifically went to see were closed, although that wasn’t mentioned where you bought the tickets.
Overall I think we are just so spoiled by the quality and diversity of wildlife that we have in SA that it is not worth spending money on it in Europe.

The mark of a good businessman is how they handle a situation that doesn't go to plan, and the way Andrea Viacava of Portofino Taxi Boat handled the poor weather forecast on the day we were scheduled to do a half-day tour showed that he...Morereading a positive review, always makes a lot of pleasure. The Promontory of Portofino, the most northern protected coastal area of the western Mediterranean, shows scenery and landscapes amongst the most famous in the world. Formed by giant conglomerate deposits overlying limestone banks, mainly of marl, it has geomorphologic and microclimatic characteristics which provide, in a limited territory, an extremely varied environment. Within short distances, we can find the cool Forests of the northern mountainside and nearby the sunny cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean world, from the civilization of chestnut to the olive one, from the peasant traditions to the sea and the fishing traditional industry. The Park of Portofino has been a protected area since 1935 and it hosts one of the largest concentrations of flora of the Mediterranean, a large variety of birds and invertebrates as well as important historical and architectural treasures such as the abbeys of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte and San Gerolamo della Cervara. A network of over 80 km of trails allows walking and hiking excursions of various lengths and difficulty, with the opportunity to enjoy the peculiarities of the whole area in the best way possible.
Portofino looks like a postcard. There are a lot of tourists, and cruise lines like to drop their share there, but that's what to expect when you go to a top tourist destination. Good restaurants and hotels. Great sight with places to walk to and historic sights that the glitterati favor.

We accidentally stumbled across this hike one afternoon and I'm so glad we did. Straight out of Camogli, it's a gentle climb to the beautiful San Rocco church, then a lovely coastal walk the rest of the way to Punta Chiappa with beautiful views. We then caught the boat back to Camogli from Porto Piddochio.

We are staying close by, and simply happened upon this church, It is way up at the top of a hill, with panoramic views. The church itself is humble, but with an amazing interior, typical of Italian churches. There is no fee to enter, and you can wonder just about anywhere you want.

The Beigua district - the largest nature protected area in Liguria - preserves the geological history of the region, jealously portrayed through rocky outcrops, mineralizations, fossil deposits, spectacular forms modelled ceaselessly due to the effects of exogenous agents. Due to the exceptional geological heritage present in the Beigua district, in March 2005 a special international commission of experts positively assessed the dossier presented by the Beigua Park Authorities, thus awarding the territory the status of European and Global Geopark under the aegis of UNESCO. In November 2015, the same area has been recognized as UNESCO site and included in the prestigious list of the UNESCO Global Geoparks. The Beigua regional nature Park - UNESCO Global Geopark represents a district made up of ten municipalities (Arenzano, Campo Ligure, Cogoleto, Genoa, Masone, Rossiglione, Sassello, Stella, Tiglieto, and Varazze) involving two different provinces (Genoa and Savona). In a territory full of contrasts such as Liguria, locked between the Mountains and the sea, the Beigua regional nature Park - UNESCO Global Geopark is a true example of a region where, even over short stretches, you can find environments and landscapes so different from one another to amaze any unsuspecting visitors. It is a spectacular gallery formed of Mountains facing out onto the sea where nature, history, culture, and ancient traditions become elements of extraordinary value and interest. In order to take full advantage of the territory, a dense hiking network has been created which covers approximately 500 kilometres and enables us to admire and appreciate the region's environmental and historical/cultural beauty. Twenty-six kilometres of mountainous ridges just a stone's throw from the Ligure Riviera, which encompass high-lying plains and precious humid zones, dense Forests of beech-trees, oak, and chestnuts, steep cliffs and rocky outcrops, Forests of Maritime Pine, and strips of Mediterranean vegetation: a mosaic of environments leading to the mountainous area of the Beigua district considered one of Liguria's richest areas in biodiversity.
We started from Varazze at 9.00 a.m by bus (a short 25 min ride) to Alpicella and then continued our way up to the Monte Beigua on foot. Have been prepared - an hiking map, some water and food (grapes etc). Our itinerary Alpicella-Rianazza-Monte Beigua took 3 hours and was quite exhausting on a sultry summer's day. You should be fit, it's not a tourist trail. We were climing and climing and waiting for a marvellous view...but the summit was covered in a cluster of telecommunication towers and the view was OK, no more. Don't expect something like in Swizerland.
Parco Naturale with a small picnic ground at 1,287 m above sea level is very popular among the locals. We had a fantasic lunch at Albergo Monte Beigua for a very reasonable price. Grazie mille!
After a 1,5 hour's break we had to set going down (M.Beigua - Strada megalita - Alpicella). Our bus back to Varazze/the final on Sunday´s 17.25 was empty just for us.

This papally designated basilica is near the port and the walls of the ancient city. It is easy to imagine both the wealthy sponsors and the at risk sailors praying to Mary for protection of their maritime adventures. Gorgeous murals. Must see

This trip came highly recommended by a friend of mine who had done it a few months earlier - I had anticipated the excursion would differ slightly simply by having different guides and a larger group ... but the actual experience was quite a bit different than we had expected or hoped for. The trip began with us waiting over an hour for the other half of our group. Although we were told that a group of this size could split into two groups, we instead paddled in the Monterosso harbor for nearly 75 minutes, wasting time until the other participants showed up. Once they finally did, the excursion felt rushed and more of an athletic event, definitely not the promised "site seeing tour providing unique opportunities to view the coastline from the water". We didn't stop at a single cave or grotto on our way up the coast. I'm also young and fit but it took everything I could just to keep up with the guides ... which meant no real time or opportunity to simply enjoy the views. We were also told there would be a chance we wouldn't get to snorkel if the rest of the group didn't want to - which, while I get fundamentally, the trip is described as kayak + snorkel so that was a bit misleading. We did stop at a small beach accessible only by boat so that was nice but the time was limited and the snorkeling was disappointing. After a short lunch, we then kicked off the athletic event again to rush back to Monterosso (this time at least stopping at one cave for a few minutes). While I honestly I had no real interest in continuing, it was quite frustrating to know we not only left more than an hour after our scheduled start time ... but we returned nearly 30 minutes early. Would've preferred to rent our own kayaks from vendors any day.

We stopped here on are way to portofino and had lunch. The views are magnificent and the town is very elegant with a beautiful beach and crystal clear water seems like a great place to spend an hour or a week if you have to time. It is well worth the trip if you are in the area.

The walking trails are superbly laid out and signposted. Breath taking views. Take plenty of water, pack your best smile, and smile all the way around. Memorable walk
