We were driving from Nordeste to Provoacao - the road was under construction - very windy and a bit hair-raising at times, so when we saw what we thought was another viewpoint, we stopped to stretch our legs. So glad we did as we wandered through this multi-level, continuously unfolding garden. It was so quiet, peaceful and beautiful - plenty of places for picnics/barbecues and washroom facilities. The views along the coast were stunning.

been there a week ago, on a rainy day.
the way to the waterfall (by the hike plan that can be shown on the azores hikes official website) is really great and mellow, full of green and the sound of water flow, reaching the waterfall is great! having fun in the cold water and just admiring mother nature.
The way back though... if following the trail on a rainy day it might be tricky, and pretty stressful, slippery little stones in high angle, possible, yet challenging, if we knew it before, we would probably go just the other way around (just , going up the stones and down the inner trail would have been easier.

it was an amazing view of the whole lake - you could do a hike down but it was a bit damp that day and pretty steep so decided to be lazy and be driven down to the lake !

We walked down to the lake as the only way you can see it ! Took about 20 min to get there ! Steep but wide walk way be aware at points you will be climbing over tree roots , walking in mud, on loose shingle and pretty steep coming back up one or two big steps between very large stones but if fit and in trainers or hiking boots it's easy !
So serene and tranquil down there fish flipping out of water, great scenery a kind of Jurassic lake ! Def worth the walk !

Caldeira das Furnas is an amazing site with numerous thermal displays to wander around and get up close to. There are mini-geisers errupting from the earth, boiling water bubbling in small ponds, fumeroles emitting puffs of steam that hiss from the ground and the characteristic smell of sulphur is in the air. The whole area has been well laid out with pathways and barriers for personal safety that do not intrude or interfere with the visual experience. Township is worth a wander too. Spectacular, dramatic and very impressive.
