It was only the second time that I walked over a frozen lake and I really start to love it! There were small sleds you could take, you can skate or just walk. I took one of the sleds and really felt like a child again! It's a great experience and definitely a must-do if you stay in Luleå.

The swedish tourist association, located in the national park, has a great rental program for all your adventure needs. We rented Nordic skis during our trip, and had a blast exploring the park!

We first saw this church after sunset and took many amazing photos and videos in the relative darkness. We later got there during the day, and found the interior to be as awesome. It is mindblowing that this huge structure is slated to be dismantled and relocated as part of the Town's relocation.

Of Sweden's 71 original church towns, only 16 are left today. The majority of these have been reduced to a remnant. Gammelstad has the country's largest and best preserved church town with 408 cottages comprising 553 rooms. The church town presumably arose from a combination of several factors: the long distances, merchants' needs for storage and accommodation at the marketplace, the church stables and last but not least the population's duty to attend church regularly. The oldest mention of Gammelstad Church Town is in Johannes Bureus' depiction of his visit here at Christmas 1600: "All farmers have their cottages near the church at a place they call The Hill". Unfortunately Bureus does not mention the age of the church town, but the first cottages were presumably built in the mid-16th century. Gammelstad Church Town was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 7 December, 1996.The World Heritage Committee's reasoning was as follows: "Gammelstad Church Town is a remarkable example of the traditional church town of northern Scandinavia. It admirably illustrates the adaptation of conventional urban design to the special geographical and climatic conditions of a hostile natural environment." The World Heritage area includes the church itself, surrounded by the Church Town, the well-to-do areas, the public buildings and certain sections of the more recent permanent buildings. The church town tradition, i.E. The custom of spending the night in church cottages in connection with church weekends, was a decisive factor for conferring world heritage status.
It is really nice with an "old" charm. You will learn the history and how the people lived back then. Further will you have a great possibility to purchase hand crafted gifts and also collects some Pocemon Go.
It was really fun for the kids, but please prepare them with mosquito oil to avoid to many bites.

We visited this church during a one week dogsledding holiday near Kiruna. This is one of the oldest churches in the region. There are three huge paintings inside. They illustrate the life of a local clergyman in the 19th century. He preached against alcohol etc and the paintings were long regarded as controversial. Note: the church is only 1 min from the Nutti Sami experience (both are 10 min on foot from the famous ice hotel).

Come along to the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine. We go by bus directly from the Tourist Center into the mountain and down to the show mine LKAB’s Visitor Centre at level 540 metres. Here in Kiruna much revolves around our mine. The guide will talk about modern mining and how it can cause a whole town to be moved. Coffee and cookies will be served in the cafe. A warm welcome!
Unfortunately we did not enjoy this tour. It was a boring, filled with corporate propaganda, with little explanation of the process of extracting the ore. However, the mines are very essential part of Kiruna's history; without the mines, probably Kiruna would not be there.

Easily accessible and reconstructed Sami camp on the old market and assembly place in the village of Jukkasjarvi. Grazing reindeer, outdoor Exhibitions about Sami culture and livelihoods. Sapmi slow food lunch and coffee served by the fire in Cafe Sapmi's giant lavvu-tent; sale of genuine Sami handicraft in adjacent handicraft shop. Guided tours. Ideal for day visitors with a limited amount of time, but still an interest to get an introduction to Sami culture, food and reindeer. Summer/autumn open: 5 Jun - 5 Nov Winter open: 6 Nov - 8 April Located next to Jukkasjarvi church and in 900 m walking distance from ICEHOTEL.
This is a very short walk from the Icehotel (20 mins max). The guides are local Sami girls; they speak from first hand experience and it is fascinating to hear then talk about their culture. They are clearly very proud of their history and contribution to the area. There is a lot of interesting information clearly displayed around the museum. They only keep a handful of reindeer in the farm. They are just gorgeous and we laughed the whole time as they couldn't wait to get to the delicious lichen we had for them (buy in the shop). The Sami are very respectful of the reindeer being wild creatures and they don't like to keep them penned up for too long, so don't be expecting lots of commercial reindeer activities!

The family business Kukkolaforsen Tourism & Conference Ltd. is run by the Spolander family. We have been active, in various ways, in the area for over 5 generations. Through lots of hard work we are constantly improving our specialties: gourmet fare, saunas ad conferences. Not long ago we had a shift in generations within the business and it is now their goal to continue developing and running Kukkolaforsen Tourism & Conference. We will continue to do everything we can to satisfy our customers and offer the most personalized service possible. Kukkolaforsen Tourism & Conference Ltd. is a conference, experience and knowledge center in the Torne Valley. The spirit of the region is presented by the rustic accommodation, the various sauna experiences, and the rewarding fishing opportunities.
We were staying at the Swedish campsite adjacent to the Torne river and Kukkolaforsen cascades. We took a stroll along the bank admiring the cascades and watching fishermen doing their job. Nature added its ambience with nice sunset in mid-June.

We went to the current city hall of Kiruna in July 2016.
If the outside is strict, the inside features walls full of art. There is also a model of the new city, and artist rendering of the new city center (the new city hall is under construction).
Take a chance to visit it before the building is taken down (2017?).
