I took the walk from Bar Beach to Newcastle. The views were gorgeous and the historical sign posting fascinating. There is a bridge and quite a steep climb at one point. There is railing all the way.
Thoroughly recommended if you want some breathtaking views of Bar Beach and Newcastle. Great photo opportunities.

Walk along the beach Promenade from Dixon Park Beach to Merewether Beach and you'll see why this beach got voted Australia's No 1 city beach. A beautiful stretch of sand, often great surf, and always a spot to park - for free.
It's a favourite and my wife and I are here nearly every morning walking our 2 dachshunds and having a coffee at Blue Door cafe.

Great for kids, picnics, birthday parties and animal viewing. Peacocks roam freely with picknickers and all can view the animal enclosures which are being renovated currently. Lots of lovely bush walks away from crowds. A great inner city retreat. Free entry.

If you keep walking on the coast from Nobbys Beach till Merewether beach you are going to reach plenty of nice spots with amazing views. Keep attention to the details in the area, some small tracks that lead to nice places and some beautiful parks on the way.

We've stayed here for 10 nights. Just loved it. Great location beside the beach and beside the Newcastle River. Easy walk to the shops and along the waterfront and along the breakwater. The park is well kept and very tidy, The amenities are very clean. Plenty of bbqs and 2 Playgrounds for the kids. Plus, it's pet friendly. Will definitely be back. Thank you.

On the way to Newcastle, we realised that we were visiting on a day the fort was scheduled to be closed. When we stopped to re evaluate our visit, we were approached by a soldier in historic costume touting for business. As a cruise ship was in harbour, the fort would be open and we could visit after all. Do not underestimate how long it takes to walk from the harbourfront as we nearly missed the one oclock gun firing by the veterans, supervised by a veteran very much like Corporal Jones of Dad's Army fame! After the salute we went on a tour of the inside of the fort which was very informative.

We had arranged to meet friends here. They had never been here either. The beach itself is lovely & clean. The only problem was that a lot of Blue Bottle jelly fish were in the sea & being washed up on the beach. Bluebottles can still give you a sting even is dead. So everyone was made aware of this. We also ate from the kiosk here. Really good rolls & a good choice of drinks. Lovely place to come to visit.

Not being from Australia, we knew very little of Newcastle other than it was famous as an industrial port. We were aware of this relatively recently opened museum in the former engine sheds. The exhibition gave us a thorough grounding concerning the industrial history of the area. Particularly fascinating was an exhibition of one particular street giving a history of each building. Whilst we did not visit the street in real life, it was great to read the stories.
