Maison Mantin

Reviewed By Rodrelle - McCrae, Australia

My husband and I contacted the staff at Maison Mantin to see how viable a day trip from Paris to Moulins would be, (when we were planning a stopover in Paris, from Melbourne). They could not have been more welcoming or helpful. We travelled from Paris by train, we were booked for the easily managed tour to fit in with the train schedule.....we managed to see a wonderful exhibit of ecclesiastical embroidery, showing at the time, enjoyed a fabulous lunch in the oldest cafe in the town, then arrived for our tour. They welcomed us so graciously and arranged a special English speaking tour guide, who was fabulous! It was so worthwhile from the embossed leather covering his bedroom walls, to the amazing towel heater in his bathroom, to the mistress' sexy boudoir, his fascinating collection of antiquities.........we couldn't have enjoyed it more....and to think it was all so well returned to its former glory! Having seen so many buildings belonging to Royalty, it was fascinating to see how a creative wealthy person of his era could create a beautiful yet unique home on a more, extravagant, but personal level!

CNCS - Centre National du Costume de Scene

The National Center of Stage Costume is the first preservation structure, in France or abroad, to be entirely devoted to the material heritage of Theaters. Its Mission is the preservation, study and valorization of a heritage collection of 10,000 theater, opera and ballet costumes in addition to painted stage sets, provided by the three founding institutions of the center, the National Library of France, the Comédie-Française and the National Opera of Paris. The center has also received numerous donations from artists and Theaters.

The National Center of Costume and Scenography, is a French museum dedicated to stage costumes and sets. The museum has a collection of Rudolf Nureyev's costumes, as requested in his will to be a "place of memory". It is a permanent collection that offers visitors a sense of his exuberant, vagabond personality and passion for all that was rare and beautiful. The collection has historical artifacts from Nureyev's career including film and photograph material, in addition to 70 costumes.
Several stage companies and theatres, including the Comédie Française and National Opera in Paris, send their costumes to the museum after their final show. At the museum they are available to be exhibited and preserved. They are also available to researchers and students for study.
Well worth a visit, you will not be disappointed.

Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Annonciation

This Cathedral has a number of beautiful XVth century stain glass windows.
In addition it houses the famous late XVth century Tryptique painting from the Maître de Moulins.
It is in amazingly good condition.
Guided visit only,no photos allowed.
The no photos allowed policy might be designed to sell postcards, yet it is becoming less and less tenable.
Modern digital cameras achieve much better color rendition than traditional post cards and as long as no flashes are used they obviously do not damage the artworks.
Most larger museums now allow photos to be taken, the time has come for smaller ones to follow suit.

In an old convent that housed a silent order of nuns, you'll see the most staggering array of needle and lace work - vestments, altar cloths, pictures etc. We had the place to ourselves, guided by the informative and proud curator whose enthusiasm knew no bounds. A place to remember. A word of warning - no labels and the guide only speaks french.

Lovely little shop on Rue Flèche worth paying a visit. I bought some macaroons, some caramel salted butter spread and some caramels which were absolutely delicious, the spiced caramel is magical. Oh, and a praline brioche too! Excellent little place of wonderful delights, oh and plenty of hand made chocolates too!

Une raison supplémentaire pour séjourner à Moulins. Bravo!
Là encore une demeure 18ème restaurée avec goût; Une déambulation très agréable entre le fonds permanent et les expositions temporaires. La "boutique" est un peu sommaire, ce qui est économique!

Hotel De Paris Spa

Reviewed By MarcoEtGiusy - Tarquinia, Italy

We booked one night here on our way back home from the holiday in France but we regret not being able to stay longer! First, we got upgraded to a suite which surely does not hurt... The room was great, with beautiful bathroom and huge bed. The hotel also offers a Spa but we had no time to check it out. There is even a small pool outside (but the promo pictures are artfully taken to make it look bigger). Breakfast was OK but rather expensive. The major issue is the free Internet connection that lasts only 4 hours and filters a lot of sites (sport, blogs) preventing me from doing my usual Reading routine.

The Church of the Sacred Heart is located in the center of Moulins, between the historic neighborhood of the Palace of the Dukes and the Allier , at the west end of the square d'Allier. Other half is religious, I liked the building for it's architecture. Popped in after visiting the Costume Museum
