PLEASE NOTE THAT SANBONA WILDLIFE RESERVE IS A PRIVATE RESERVE & PRE-BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL. THE RESERVE DOES NOT OFFER DAY TRIPS OR SELF DRIVE GAME VIEWING TRIPS. Nestled at the foot of the towering Warmwaterberg Mountains in the heart of the Little Karoo, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve celebrates the spirit of the San people who once roamed this distinctive area. Sanbona and the spirit of the San people welcome you. More than 54 000 hectares of undulating Mountains and plains, indigenous flora and fauna, rock formations and rock art make this a destination not to be missed.
Basically a luxury lodge in a very large private reserve.
Expect to pay USD500/day/person.
That said, everything is world class.
We came away with a heightened sense of how fragile Africa's wildlife stock really is.
You can see most everything in two days.
If you suffer from car sickness, note the jeeps will make it worse.
That said, be prepared to be enchanted.

The tractor trip is well worth the trip. Treat yourself to a potjiekos lunch, set in the unspoilt forest. Good old traditional South African fare cooked on the fires. Vetkoek and freshly baked bread and preserves for starters. Other than the selection of potjies there's pudding and delicious coffee - brewed on the fire:-)

Route 62 is a much more scenic option from Oudtshoorn to Cape Town or the other way. The landscape changes all the time and you pass through interesting towns such as Barrydale (we stayed there 2 nights) with it's famous roadside cafes (Ronnies Sex Shop/Diesel & Creme). There were a number of veld fires burning away on some of the hilltops as we drove along and clouds of smoke were drifting around the Valleys. The Ashton/Montague section of road is being rebuilt so allow additional journey time of around 15mins to navigate the road works due to contra flows/speed restrictions. On the Paarl/Worcester section of N1 you can either take the toll tunnel or the longer (approx 10km) drive over Du Toits Kloof pass which personally I would recommend if you have the time.

This year we actually got to the Gardens, where every Tuesday at 10 am, until end of October they have a tea garden. Wow the food was super and all fresh and home made. Unfortunately like everywhere in the Western Cape, due to the drought, the Gardens were perhaps not at their best, but it is a super place to visit, and we even got to see a few tortoises too. It is very well kept and easily accessible.

Really enjoyed the tour around this house. Our guide, Mandy, had only just started doing tours and she was so enthusiastic and knowledgable . Fascinating glimpse into a bygone era, especially in the kitchen with its floors made of peach stones and beeswax. There were huge blocks of soap , candle making equipment , enamel tins for the herbs grown in the garden etc
The garden was full of herbs for medicinal and culinary purposes and a lovely place to sit in the sun.

An open pond centrally situated in Montagu, opened I think in 2009.A haven for wading birds such as egrets and mainly the Noticeable sacred Ibis who nest noisily in the surrounding tree tops. a hide gives good cover and photo opportunities.. Now and again (if lucky) a Hadeda Ibis with it's unique mournful cry will fly low overhead,, my favourite bird, As with Montagu, the best things are free it proves!

Sparsely furnished museum with few unique exhibits , a bit more English text descriptions would be helpful

A superb people led market selling fresh hot foods in thai style, italian styles, home made meats on home baked burger rolls, organic (and Cheap ) tomatoes, relishes, peaches, apples, plums etc, salad greens and olives.. This along with breads, biscuits, home made knitware, animal charity stall, African beadwork and art stalls plus books and bric a brac,, this all within a small shady, green area and with a vibrant atmosphere. A Must See every Saturday Morning!

This elegant church occupies pride of place at the top of Church St and its elevated position serves as a landmark in the town. I found the choice of colour interesting, as it is painted in a creamy off-white rather than the more commonly used bright-white. Apparently the residents say there is less glare and less reflected heat with this colour.
The damage to the steeple and church clock that occurred during a storm a few years ago, has been repaired, the Gardens are well tended and it is well worth taking the time to walk around and admire this fine building.

Located a few blocks from downtown, this gallery is sited in a lovely old home. Though I am not partial to water colors, the artist is very prolific, and the art shows well. Prices are reasonable, and it is a worthwhile stop to browse around and see if you find something to your liking.
