This restaurant is in an old imposing and historic building which was once the only hotel in town.it retains an element of grandeur with chandeliers and a pianist in the background in the restaurant but the overall dining experience falls short somewhat of the fine dining experience it promises.
The food was ok and my whole red Roman was wel cooked but the food and waiting staff need to be smartened up from a presentation point of view and the wine list too needs to offer much more.

My husband and I had a marvellous dinner here. We were served by the patron Simon and charming and gifted chef Wendy. Simon is a perfectionist, and although it was a busy evening; he took time to explain the wine and to wrestle with a table that wasn’t quite level( I’d pushed it out of place). The dessert was divine and was accompanied by a sensational brandy.

Olde worlde charm, with-it country fayre.A casual open-air venue of Kruis Farm. From 9 'o clock in the morning we serve breakfast, coffee & tea with fresh, farm-baked goodies. Or come and enjoy a light lunch on the stoep or in te garden. We only use natural & local ingredients in our cooking.
We had lunch and maybe it was because of the hot day (41 degrees C) but we were not impressed by the service and food. at all. The lady who helped us was not welcoming us in a friendly way, eventhough we made a reservation beforhand. When the lunch arrived she said "here you are" iso "enjoy your meal" and walked away and when she collected the plates, she said "finished"?
The shrimp tempura.... tasteless, no herbs added to the tempura. Everything covered with french fries, I could hardly see the shrimps.
We left after paying, they didn't even see us walking away.
Looking at the other reviews, I think it was just not our day (and that of the waitress).

We just had an overnight stop here but it was pleasant enough. Good breakfast and lovely garden. The wifi wasn't working on our side of the hotel but that's no biggie and the AC unit was not working too well either. Good value.

Montagu has empty streets when we arrived at Burgundy Gherkin, but the restaurant was full, so it was obviously the place to go for the best pizza in town. We were not disappointed. I had a ‘Greece’ pizza (salami, olives and feta) to which I added anchovies, and it was beautifully crispy and cheesy. My friend ordered the Banting base for his blue cheese and caramelized onion pizza and said it was one of the best he’s ever had. So thumbs up for Burgundy Gherkin. What it may lack in ambiance it certainly makes up for with its food. Just realize that this is a pizza/pasta only place...!
