While cruising, we recently had the opportunity to spend a day with A+ Adventures Belize for bird watching at Crooked Tree. Albert was very responsive in his pre-trip emails. Upon arrival, he was easily located just outside the front doors of the terminal. The van was only a short walk, was clean, and had A/C. The hour drive took us through the city on the way out of town. This was a nice chance to get a glimpse into Belizean life. Albert showed us points of interest and answered all of our questions.
The last few miles of the trip were a bit slow and bumpy as the road approaching the sanctuary is a rural, gravel road. Upon arriving at the resort from which our boat tour would launch, we had about 30 minutes for the restrooms, small gift shop, and pre-order some lunch. From the drive and grounds, we had 20 birds before we even got on the boat!
The 3 hr boat ride was great. There were 9 of us in total with room for a few more. The boat had a canopy and bottled water. The guide was very pleasant and sharp with his spotting and ids. I photographed 40+ species of interest, so we must have seen 50+ that day. A better birder or with more time, surely we would have added dozens more. We saw 8 or 9 of our target bird, the Jabiru. Awesome! We had luck with Kingfishers too with great looks at Ringed, Green, Belted, and Pygmy. There were Herons aplenty with Great/Little Blue, Green, Boat-Billed, and even Agami! Raptors included Black-Collared, Great Black, & Roadside Hawks, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Snail Kite, and Lesser Yellow-Headed & Black Vultures. Water birds: White/Glossy Ibis, Great/Snowy Egrets, Limpkin, Northern Jacana, Black-Necked Stilt, Roseate Spoonbill, Wood Stork, Gull-Billed Tern and more. We also picked up Mangrove Swallow, Rufous-Tailed Hummingbird, Tropical Kingbird & Mockingbird, Vermillion Flycatcher, Yellow-Throated Warbler, Baltimore Oriole, and Ani (sp?). We also saw turtles, iguanas, and crocodiles.
Once back ashore, our pre-ordered lunch was delivered and we had another chance to hit the restrooms & gift shop. From there, we enjoyed our quesadilla, chicken finger, and Fanta lunches as we rode back to town. For 2 adults/2 kids, I think it was $40 ($12 adults/$6 kids/$1 sodas). Not quite McDonalds’ prices, but you cannot beat the location! We were dropped off timely and right at the front door of the terminal. All in all it was a great trip and good value. I would (and plan to) take the same exact trip next time in port. Thanks Albert!

ACES Educational Crocodile Eco-Sanctuary provides visitors with an amazing opportunity to view threatened and vulnerable American and Morelet's crocodiles while also providing an educational tour through the exhibits. The potential for seeing other wildlife, especially birds, is very likely!
When we asked the director of the Belize Zoo what would make a good stop on the way to the airport, she responded without hesitation.
You can’t get any fresher than this. I am forever spoiled when it comes to shrimp. The frozen ones we get at home just don’t cut it anymore.
Just the Croc Sanctuary or the Shrimp Farm/restaurant would have made it worth the trip. Having both was a real treat. The area attracts some really cool birds too. Climb the tower for a fabulous view.

I read all the reviews, good and bad, and decided to give Tropic Ferry a try, ONLY because I didn't want to take the plane from Belize City to San Pedro.
I was pleased my email communication with Tropic Ferry was responded to quickly and I checked, double checked and triple checked that my reservation from Belize City to our resort on Ambergris Caye was confirmed. (They had my credit card to charge for half the total costs but never processed a charge.) I even asked if we would be transported if our plane was late getting to Belize City and was told by them via writing, "If the flight is delayed we would wait for your guys. :)".
Our arriving flight was about 40 minutes late, and we were met with two men, one holding a sign with our name on it. He said "lets go over here to talk" and proceeded to tell me that since our plane was late and there was "weather" Tropic Ferry would not take us to our resort. We could either get a hotel in Belize City and be transported the next day or take a flight if there were seats available. We elected to take a flight and the driver, who was not an employee of Tropic Ferry but was just Tropic Ferry's messenger, worked to get one of the two airlines to give us the last two seats. We thanked him, tipped him well, and went on our way.
Tropic Ferry did not keep their word. Yes the plane was a little late, however they already had told me they would wait for us. (Best I could tell there was no significant weather occurring at that time.) I never heard from Tropic Ferry - not an apology, not an explanation, nor any communication as to our reservation for returning to Belize City the week later. I later contacted them to cancel our return trip with them.
While on the island I inquired with others on the island as to their experience with Tropic Ferry and they all responded they do not recommend them due to their unreliability, poor communication, history of being no show.
So there you have it. Use them at your own risk. We were lucky there was one last flight available or we would have been required to scramble to get a hotel room and lose our already paid for first night at our resort on the island.
We traveled back to Belize City on one of the two taxi ferry services which was very reliable, efficient and inexpensive.
