A Canopy Tour® takes you on an unforgettable adventure as you slide from one platform to the next along a series of steel cables set amongst magnificent natural surroundings. It is widely regarded as one of the best eco-adventure activities in the world and is something for people of all ages with the youngest being 3 and the oldest 90 so far to do the tour. The concept of Canopy Tour originated in the rain Forests of Costa Rica, where scientists were studying animals and birds in the Canopy Layer of the Forest. Safely sliding from tree to tree to a series of platforms became a novel way to see the flora and fauna of an indigenous forest. A whole new level of appreciation was born when the concept became one of South Africa’s most popular eco adventure activities. Karkloof canopy tour is only 1:30 from Durban, near Howick in the Midlands, this is a must do activity especially for nature lovers or adventure seekers looking to do something truly unique. Professional guides assure the safety of each group and point out interesting facts along the way. It’s ideal for team building, kid’s parties, family get-togethers, corporate events or just a fun day out. Open every day, with tours every half an hour from 8am to 3pm. Come experience one of South Africa’s fastest growing eco-adventures with thousands of satisfied thrill-seekers having already caught the bug.
If you bored this is something very exciting to do. Our guides Sibi, Sam and Bheki made it very special and entertaining. All staff very friendly and helpful. Awesome first experience.

I was very impressed with the small museum at the Capture Site. It had lots of displays and photos about Nelson Mandela and his struggles, as well a biographic story board. The museum was free to enter but asked for donations. It was then a pleasant stroll down to the Capture Site and the monument that has been built.
They are in the process of building a new museum.

Worth a visit when you are in the Howick area. The dogs are definitely the attraction but it shouldn't take away from the lovely lunch served by an attentive service team. The meals were delicious.
They were even willing to assist with the wheelchair and getting our grandfather in and out of the car.
And life is too short to have bad coffee so make your way there! It offers a great variety.

We visited the farmers market last week. The stores are truly lovely however I found most things to be a bit overpriced. I also found the breakfast stands to be a little expensive for a quick farmers market brekkie. Although I must say the French toast we had was very tasty. If you are looking for an artisanal experience, willing to spend a bit extra, and push through bustling crowds then this is the market for you. Otherwise rather head to another farmers market for a more practical shopping experience.

I was visiting the Midlands area and made a small detour to visit the falls, after they had been recommended to me. It doesn't take very long to visit the site from the N3.
The craft stalls are a little tacky, but I just parked up and went to view the falls. They really were quite spectacular. Definitely worth making the effort to visiting them whilst in the area

An amazing place being encroached upon by urbanisation. A lovely day's outing, with accommodation options available. There are several places available for picnics but be warned that only one is accessible from your vehicle if you have restricted mobility issues, and it is alongside the road of the neighboring complex so there is a constant stream of traffic on the other side of the fence.
This place is primarily for hikers and bikers. Well worth the visit as the paths and the reserve in general is beautifully maintained.

Sarah from Active Escapes managed to secure us a booking in an almost impossible time of the year - all in just a week before the trip. They offer a complete service, from booking accommodation, to arranging transfers, meals - even packed lunches for day trips- and hiking guides. We did the Amphitheater 3 day hiking trip and from the hints and tips we received one could surely see that they are experienced in what they do. Very organised, quick with responses. A pleasure to have worked with them and we would definitely book future trips through them.

The Karkloof Conservation Centre boasts 2 bird hides strategically built to allow the visitor maximum birding enjoyment. A rich diversity of birdlife abounds on the farm where agriculture and dairy-farming are practiced in harmony with fauna and flora. A list of over 190 bird varieties, including all 3 of SA's Crane species can be seen. Bring your binoculars, pack a picnic & enjoy the experience.
Karkloof Conservation Centre's bird hides are a hidden treasure - the one hide overlooks a pond which gave us lots of activity - load of geese, bishops and kingfishers and other little treats. The second hide's lake is dry and obviously less active without the water. I loved it and it was a real treat coming from Australia to visit a little bird hide in a little place in a big country. Charming.

St Luke's Anglican Church is a traditional old stone church set in a tranquil garden near the famous Howick waterfall. The church itself is well worth a visit (open Mondays-Fridays during office hours) and has some interesting old gravestones next to the church. On Sundays, the little church is packed for all of its - traditional - services. Well worth knowing is that on Saturday mornings, the ladies of the church have a tea garden where, for church funds, they serve a pot of tea or coffee with a home-made crumpet or scone with jam and cream for only R15! In the background you may even hear one of the local organists playing the little pipe organ in the church in preparation for the Sunday service.Well worth a visit!!
