Best known to most Germans as the locale of Georg-August University, Gottingen has about 130,000 residents, about a quarter of whom are students. Gänseliesel (Goose Girl) is the city's most famous resident, a 1901 fountain built in front of the 14th century Rathaus (Town Hall), which today houses the city's tourist office. But even Goose Girl can't escape the college students, who by tradition upon receiving their PhDs must climb and kiss her, making her "the most kissed girl in the world."

Located in Goettingen's city centre on pedestrianised Weedner Strasse, opposite the Altes Rathaus, the Gaenseliesel is a magnet for tourists. The tradition of university graduates kissing the maiden holding the swan is interesting. Worth a looksee but don't spend too much time trying to get the perfect selfie or wefie.

Managed by the students in the nearby university. Visiting the pond area with the noisy frogs was a delight! There is another less developed garden sight near to the far uni campus that's well worth seeing too. Go into the greenhouse it should be renamed 'hotbouse'!

This place should be one of your first stops if you're new to the town. It holds the Tourist Office, provides you with information on current events, AND is a beautiful, historical place to visit. You can also schedule a guided tour from the Tourist Office here!

Was too far away and quite a disappointing. Nice if you have seen the Göttingen inner city circle, and have too much time. Dont expect too much...

The tower itself is neat and taller than I expected at 4 stories, though we weren't able to go inside because it was closed.
The hike up was less than 500 meters from where we parked on Bismarckstraße near the Kaiser-Wilhelm Center. Though the trail was a bit steep, it only took us a few minutes to hike up to the tower.
It's a great place to enjoy the pretty woods and if you take lunch or a snack, you can enjoy it at their Flintstones' style stone and wood picnic table just beneath the tower.

This church is definitely a must-see. The optical illusions created by the painting of the columns inside are something you won't see anywhere else. The modern artwork of the windows in the left nave are a prime example of how to convey a medieval church carefully into modern times.
You can also climb the spire for a small fee which however we did not do.

While many visit the Gaenseliesel statue, I find the newer Lichtenberg statue a bit more interesting. Especially as you learn more about the educated man represented by the statue.
