Helgustaðir farther along the shore east of the village Eskifjorður, is world-famous. Polarizing light with Iceland spar from here, the 17th century Dutchman Huygens published discoveries on light as a phenomenon of waves. Evidence of former mining, Helgustaðanama, makes a visit worthwhile, note all relics of the area are protected.
We did a part of trail 6. Supposedly, there should be an interesting sight almost directly at the start of the hike, however we didn't see anything of particular interest. The climb up was quite challenging and there was a very cold wind. Although the view was very nice from up above, Iceland has much more beautiful sights to see. Wouldn't recommend it, but nice if you have some spare time.

Trips, emphasizing on meeting the people in the East, introducing our habits, history and culture. The goal is "Come as a stranger, leave as a friend". We emphasise on personals service and five star experience.
We came to East Iceland together with Swedish and Estonians to partners meeting under Nordplus Adult project. Hosting organisation Austurbru invited us for the dinner to house of locals in Eskifjordur. Svanhvít and Agnar originally came to East Iceland from Heimaey island, which was very destroyed in 1973 because of volcano eruption. Many people had to leave their houses and move to other places in Iceland. Svanhvít and Agnar prepared for us traditional Icelandic dishes - plokkfiskur (fish stew) and the desert skyrkaka (Skyrcake), both of them were extremely delicious! Good food was complemented with interesting stories from Icelandic family's life. Svanhvít and Agnar have 6 children, the youngest one - son Tumi - had the dinner together with us. The head of family is fisherman, her wife is teacher in primary school. We liked this dinner very much, because we felt the spirit of Icelandic family and heard about their jobs, daily life, traditions and habits.

The flourishing bird life and unusual rock formations make it extremely pleasant for outdoor recreation, whether up among the cliffs or down at the shoreline.

I go there often with my family and we just love the area. The view is stunning and ski slopes are great.

A hike around the very bend of Svartafjall, east of Eskifjordur, took me and my son (age 17) through wonderfully pristine hiking country. Hikers quite literally go where the sheep and horses go: you follow the narrow animal tracks that rise, fall and wind with the mountenous coastal side of the fjord. Shoes go off where little streams have to be crossed, windjackets go off when the sun treats you to a bit of welcome warmth along the sometimes windy tracks. Thousands of flowers, hundreds of sea birds, unexpected exposed minerals, interesting cultural, historical and natural landmarks. Pick dry, preferably not too cold weather, bring sturdy boots, plenty to eat and drink: we hiked the better part of a day (8-10hours). A magnificent hike!
