What a terrific small museum! The exhibits take you on a trip through ancient and modern history in Albania. You see lovelier Greek style vases than we saw in Athens museum. They have a marvelous bust of an Illyrian woman that allows you to study that civilization's unique facial features. Part of the collection includes items from the cult of Aphrodite (Venus). And they have a sizeable collection of amphora, some of them still barnacle-encrusted. The brass identification plaques list items and dates in English. Your museum ticket admits you to the Amphitheater, which lies a short walk uphill. The museum closes between 2pm and 5pm.

Roman arches - piles of rocks - modern housing sits atop. The Durres Amphitheatre is well worth checking out.

This is an imposing and impressive mosque overlooking a central square. We were politely reminded that the upstairs is women only, but the downstairs for men only. The furnishings are not memorable.

The castle walls are still prominent and relatively intact. They dominate the landscape.
They are also adjacent to the Amphitheater, which makes for a great combined visit.
The main castle has a trendy bar with great Seating in the alcoves and on the roof - definitely a nice place to stop in. But it is truly a bar.

I'm glad I saw it, but it's a really small, ruin that's been overtaken by development. I do wish this country had realized how important the ancient history was before it decided to develop the city right next to this ancient ruin. Which, by the way, is pretty much a garbage dump.

I want to combine two "attractions" into one entry here on Tripadvisor, because they're really practically the same thing in the same place. Up the hill closest to the center of town, you'll find the Royal Villa, or King Zog's palace. Watch the one-way streets, but it's easy to find your way up. It was built from 1926-37, but was heavily damaged in 1997 and rebuilt. Apparently, the building is still in use by the Albanian military, so you can't really get very close to it. You can drive past it, and there's a small space on the side of the road to pause while you take a picture or two of it. However, if you have a decent zoom, there's really better places to get a picture of it. People mostly come up here, however, for the view over the city and the sea. This, however, is why I'm combining the Royal Villa with the Lighthouse for this review.
If it's a view you want (and the palace isn't impressive enough to drive up there just for it), then if you have a car that can handle it, keep going up the hill. The road will give way to a rocky path, and ultimately lead to the top of the hill where a half-constructed large building sits. It's just a wide-open space with a fence. This is the best view of the city and the water. It doesn't look like you can get to the lighthouse anymore - if you walk toward it you will run into a fence. The views, however, are pretty spectacular. Would be an incredible place to watch a sunset or sunrise, if you are so inclined. Beware of mud and take care driving.

The smell of the water from a distance is putrid. I would never bathe there let alone let my children. It is a dumping zone of waster. Never, ever, ever again N. Albania
