This museum emerged from the Diekirch Historical Museum (opened in 1984), which was primarily dedicated to the "Battle of the Bulge" in Luxembourg in winter 1944/45. The key topic of the museum remains the balanced and objective historical representation of the military operations in the Ardennes from the german, american and civilian points of view. Over 3000 square meters of exhibition space and numerous lifesize impressive dioramas enable an insight of the dramatic and tragic situations that both, soldiers and civilians, were caught in. Special showrooms feature extensive collections of weapons, uniforms, military equipment of all kind, wheeled- and tracked vehicles, in addition to numerous personal soldier's belongings, photographs, documents and maps. The museum's core is doubtlessly the detailed diorama of the night-time Sauer river crossing at Diekirch on January 18th, 1945 by units of the 5th U.S. Infantry division. A second part at MNHM museum is dedicated to the history of Luxembourg's own armed forces since the creation of Luxembourg as a state, until present. A number of large-scale striking dioramas cover key aspects and periods of the post WWII Luxembourg army. Other sections are dedicated to Luxembourgers fighting in allied armies in both WWI, WWII, and during the Korean conflict.
The information, exhibits, artifacts, etc. contained within this museum are simply astonishing. I have a strong interest in history in general but was only able to appreciate the breadth and depth of the presentations here on an overall level. Regardless, I enjoyed my visit tremendously...MoreDear PamelaK O, Thank you for your excellent review. This gives us conviction that we had the right instinct and hope we'll still have it during our renovation.

We are specialized in individual, personal and small group tours about WWII in Luxembourg and thematic excursions, such as general Liberation of Luxembourg and Battle of the Bulge including Bastogne and surroundings, Patton in Luxembourg, Jewish community, German “Westwall” fortifications, the importance of the 28th US Inf.Div./PA Natl’Guard in the Ardennes 44/45 etc.
Five stars for Roland Gaul and Gaul’s Legacy Tours. We met Roland while on a small group tour of The Bulge arranged by a U.S. WW2 museum. Of the several well-known Bulge guides we had that week, it was Roland who wowed us all. (See...MoreThank you for taking the time to review us and your positive comments. Interresting small good equipped museum, low fee. Parking can be problem, I recommend parking over the church nearby. Very nice ways to Diekirch for motorcycle trip or oldtimers. Worthy to go to nearby located nice old town Vianden and Vianden castle.
If by motorcycle, use to Luxembourg city road nr. 14 (Larochette) or 356 with nice views.

It is small, like Diekirch, it is children friendly and has some real gems to show. It offers you a small walk under the floor of the old church at some roman graves, a very nice roman Mosaique and than an intersting overview over centuries of...MoreThank you very much for your kind words! As we read in a tourist information the description of Diekirch, we tought OK we will visit the old center.
But what a disillusion. There is really in the center nothing to see.....
The center was really dead. In less than half an hour you are through.
So it is certainly not worth to stop there.

This was the first time I did a biking trail. We arrived around 12:30 at the bike shop and could chose between a city bike and a mountain bike. We went for the mountain bike and chose a route to Echternach which is approximately 32 km. We followed the signs and along the way saw how beautiful and calm the scenery is. We got back at 16:30 and were exhausted but satisfied. The bikes are in good conditions and the man working there was friendly. We paid €12 for a day's rental. It's different than hiking but definitely recommendable, cool experience.

We had seen this stone arch in the guide book so decided to check it out.
We were camped on the river so took the riverside path along to the kayaking practice section.
We then saw a route up to the rock via a nature reserve.
This path zig zagged up the hill across fields; we saw lots of green woodpeckers, highland cattle, buzzards and other wild birds.
It was a good walk but we finally got to the top path where the arch was.
We walked along expecting to see a large rock arch.
We then arrived to a slightly smaller one to what we expected. It still had great views and a picnic table to enjoy the area.
It is worth a visit but be prepared for its size.
Enjoy your walk through the nature reserve to make the journey worth while :-)
