What to do and see in Cuddalore, India: The Best Places and Tips

September 27, 2017 Terina Blouin

Cuddalore /kʌdəˈlɔːr/ ( listen) is a city which is the headquarters of the Cuddalore District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Scholars believe the name Cuddalore is derived from Koodalur, meaning confluence in Tamil. While the early history of Cuddalore remains unclear, the town first rose to prominence during the reign of Pallavas and Medieval Cholas. After the fall of Cholas, the town was ruled by various dynasties like Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Thanjavur Nayaks, Thajavur Marathas, Tipu Sultan, French and the British Empire. Cuddalore was the scene of Seven Years' War and the Battle of Cuddalore in 1758 between the French and British. It has been a part of independent India since 1947. During the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, Cuddalore was one of the affected towns, with 572 casualties.

Pichavaram is a lovely tourist spot if you want to experience some calm and quiet, away from the noise and pollution of the city. These trips on the backwaters take you through mangroves which are the 2nd largest in India with the cool sea breeze calming you down as we watch some birds like kingfishers.

On 2nd day of our twelve days religious personal tour in pious Shravan month from Chennai to Trivandrum by taxi, we visited this holy temple Lord Shiva situated just 20 km from puduchery in the big town named Cuddalore. Padaleeswarar shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the ancient temples in Tamil Nadu. It was constructed during the Pallava and Medieval Chola periods. There is a belief/myth that by worshiping single time this God is equal to 16 times worshipping the Shiva in Kasi, 8 times in Thiruvannamalai and 3 times in Chidambaram. A must visit place for devotee of Lord Shiva.

Temple is an important one for Vadagalai Vaishnavites. It is famous because of the association of Vedanta Desika with this Divya Desam.
Large number of devotees mostly drawn from villages and towns within a radius of 50 km offer worship with family during Chitirai month brahmotsavam and the entire month of Purattasi. During marriage muhurtham days, there is a huge rise in visitors. Devotees are very happy after worship. However they feel that Archakas can be more courteous with devotees in this temple.

Seaside Promenade

The Seaside Promenade parallels the mad-made rock shoreline. It is a pleasant escape from the city traffic and noise, but our experience was marred by the casual way the locals walk down to the rocks and throw their plastic bags filled with rubbish into the ocean. It may be India but it doesn't have to be that way!

Bhuvaraha Swami Temple

Reviewed By chanse3 - Bengaluru, India

’ One of the 8 Swayambhu Vishnu Kshetras. Idol is saligrama has Varaha face turned to left with human body. It is 3 incarnation of Vishnu. Temple and the gopuram are big & some renovation work was going on. Lord’s consort is Ambujavalli Thayar. There is also a separate shrine for SAPTHAMATHRUKAS. There is pushkarini behind the temple premises. There is Nithileshwaran temple in front of puskarini.
Nithileshwara Swamy temple is very old and in need of repair. The ASI has put up a protected monument board which does not mention anything about the temple. According to the local people the priest visits the temple briefly in the morning & evening. There are separate shrines for Shiva & Parvathy. Though the temple is just behind the popular Bhuvaraha Swamy temple of Srimushnam very few visit Nithileshwara Swamy temple. May be if more visitors visit the temple the conditions may improve.

It is an old French Church built in memory of French soldiers. There are huge 3D pictures of the Stations of the Cross. The side altars too have huge statues. It will leave you in awe. There is a staircase by which people can go upstairs and hear mass from the first floor.
The place is peaceful, very clean and well maintained.
