On a day long trip to the falls and Montebello lakes.
The falls are clean, spotless, seemingly endless. A great guide provided gratis.
We hiked to the top, incredible views and colors. A short chance to swim in chilly waters.
An incredible outing! But, not for physically unfit since it's a trek.

Compared to other archaeological cities I've visited in central Mexico and Oaxaca where you dash across sun-baked dry expanses, Chinkultic was lush and forested... felt like a walk in the countryside, with pyramids. Trees, birdsong, lawns, a relaxing pace. As with all ancient cities we'd benefit from Reading up first, as I'm not 100% confident in the guards/guides' accuracy. There's a climb up a hill with a view of a sacrificial cenote, and detailed bas-reliefs next to the ball court, and it seems that the forested hills are actually more pyramids that just haven't been excavated. There's no entrance fee and I'd definitely recommend it.

Comitan is a big modern town compared to other "pueblitos" in Chiapas, but the historical district in downtown is totally different.
It's only a couple of blocks, but it's worth to spend the afternoons here, there are nice restaurants bars and coffee shops around the main plaza, you can stroll around and visit the "casa de la cultura", city hall and museums.
On weekends there are bands playing and literally all families come out and relax (mom, dad and the kids) it's really safe and inexpensive to have a relaxing time.

We visited Tenam Puente ruin this summer. It's about 15 miles outside of the City of Comitan, and not as easy to get to as other sites I have visited. It cost about 200 Pesos to get there by Taxi, and given the route we took to get out, that was the right way to go. It was about $50 pesos per person to get in, but once in we were treated to a sprawling beautiful site. Lots to climb on and explore, the signs were great. Sadly the ticket stand lacks a gift shop - if someone could write a book about the site to sell it would be most helpful and maybe make some money for the site. We even got to see one of the researchers at work cleaning some bones recovered at the site. This person gave us lots of information we might not have learned. It was a great place - take a picnic lunch as there are no diners or shops nearby. When it was time to go back to town, the gate guard called a Combi for us, and for about 20 pesos a person we were transported back to the center of town.

I cannot recommend this place more. We visited lots of beautiful places in Chiapas, but nothing was as what we experienced in Las 3 Tzimoleras. Communication was fast and easy with our guide, Angel. He met us at the park and had truly Chiapaneca breakfast at his lovely mum's house. Soon we were off but not before Angel's mum packed us a nutritious, truly local lunch called "chin-ku-hua-khes" made of handmade tortillas and beans, and drink of the Mayan gods, corn "pozol"! Angel gave us a running commentary as we drove through the Mountains and stopped for us to take pictures. Once we got there, the Waterfalls were just beautiful. The forest is very tranquil and you'll be the only people there. We walked and swam in/along the river where Angel challenged us to leap off cascades, big and small…then one very big one! I'm so glad I did it! We swam some more and just absorbed the power of the falls, then relaxed around a fire built by Angel, swinging off hammocks as the sun went down. I'd definitely go back again but next time I'm packing my tent to spend a few nights there! Thank you Angel!

My husband and I are Americans living in Guatemala, and must renew our passport visas every 90 days. We have been going to Mexico, and after a friendly family recommended it, making regular trips to Lagos de Colon, outside of La Mesilla, GT. This is an astonishingly beautiful, peaceful and relaxing place to spend a few days. It is filled with rivers, Springs, cascades of fresh water and is about a mile from a very accessible archaeological site as well. For less than $2.50 per person admission is very reasonable, there are hiking trails, swimming holes, boats for rent, picnic areas, cabins, and good food from local restaurants. It is clean, safe and an ecological reserve. Every time we have gone, we have been happy. And I can't wait to go back.

Of course, the fact that it was all decked out for the Christmas holidays was beautiful, it is a lovely well-maintained park. Our hotel was only a couple of blocks away so we strolled down there numerous times in both daylight and dark. Saturday night there was a marimba band playing, many chairs for the watchers, and lots of couples out on the "dance floor"! Quite a fun evening! There are cafes, bars, and restaurants all around the square.

We found two permanent exhibit rooms and one room that housed a traveling exhibit. The permanent rooms were only documented in Spanish whereas the traveling exhibit was documented in Spanish and English. There was a wide range of artifacts that were quite interesting. There were also quite a few photographs and paintings. We enjoyed spending about an hour there and found it quite worthwhile even though I wasn't able to understand much of what was written in Spanish!
