Miniere di Capoliveri

Reviewed By WillMarks - Brighton, United Kingdom

If you manage to navigate the 6km dirt track from Capoliveri to the mine then this is a fantastic tour of a disused mine on Elba that remains a strategic asset for the Italian state government. It's worth remembering that there are only certain times during the day that tours leave the main visitor centre, which are listed on the website. We weren't aware of that so we brought some tickets for the next tour and were recommended a place to go an eat lunch while we waited.
When it's the time of your tour, you leave in convoy behind a guide bus from the visitor centre down to the mine (if you don't have a car you travel in the bus). It's about a 10 minute drive down to the mine where you're given audio-guides and hard hats. Our tour guide spoke English pretty well and there were only about 6 of us in the tour compared to around 20 in the Italian one. We were led down into the mine mixing our tour guide with audio-guide. Going down into the depths of the earth and seeing the mine was an amazing experience and would highly recommend this tour.

It is easily accessible and beautifully located. I wanted to spend some time on the beach in the afternoon, so we stopped the car on the way to Capolivieri and it was a good decision. This sandy beach is very nice and clean. The entrance to water is pleasant and you can swim to the next bay, which is almost empty, even in August. Very relaxing afternoon.

Monte Calamita

Reviewed By rrayuela - Prague, Czech Republic

From Capoliveri take an unpaved road heading south-west towards Monte Calamita mines, continue to Tenuta delle Ripalte where you take another unpaved road towards the Beaches of Buzzancone and Calanova. There you can comfortably wait for the father who just needs to ascend a steep hill back to Capoliveri to pick up the car (you are allowed to go by car only towards a restaurant on the Calanova beach from one side and towards Ripalte property on the other). Even the kids of 6 and 5 years (experienced bikers) were satisfied as the road goes uphill only once (before arriving to the Ripalte property). Those who don't mind ascending quite a steep hill can of course go back to Capoliveri by bike. Those who don't want to visit the Beaches can take another unpaved road from the Ripalte property back to Capoliveri (north west uphill).
Wonderful views over the sea practically all the time. Worth bathing at one of the beautiful "natural" Beaches before arriving at Calanova.

We had to walk quite a while from our place to reach this big beach, but it was absolutely worth it. It is wide, sandy wit easy entrance to water. I spent some wonderful time there. In spite of the number of visitors in August, it is not difficult to find a place in the sun :) I could come back even now.

Capoliveri Bike Park

Reviewed By mom_triathlete - Chicago, Illinois

A truly amazing experience, not to be missed if you are on Elba and have any affinity for cycling, or just want an enjoyable way to sightsee. I have some tips: 1. the name "bike park" is confusing. These are routes, five of them, of varying difficulty. The routes are mostly on roads, some paved, some gravel. Areas of the most difficult routes are off-road (but I did not rise them). So don't look for a "bike park" thinking you will find an entrance somewhere. The routes all start in the same spot in the center of Capoliveri. 2. I agree with others that the routes are well-marked. Still, I would definitely take the route map along. I used it often, to have a better understanding of where I was. 3. Bring plenty of water. The route I was on (red) had very little shade. I went through two full water bottles. 4. The red route 12.5 miles/20 km) was spectacular. They advertise it as the easiest, however, it is not easy. It is mostly flat but does have some steep climbs, particularly for the last few kilometers. The views of the sea are incredible, and there is also an area with beautiful vineyards.
I only went out for about two hours, because I got a late start. If I did it again, I would go out in the morning and make a day of it. There are beautiful small Beaches on the red route, restaurants, a vineyard and other places to stop.

Good Service and Great Hospitality
The beach is nice, quite enough to get a nap, with an excellent (optional) service and with a decent bar.
If you like you can bring your umbrella and chairs, otherwise ask about Mario, and he will find some room for you. Kids and dog-friendly, clean, and not exposed to any N, NW, NE, E winds.
The bar is a little bit expensive, but you can get a salad or a Sandwich pretty quickly.

The beach was crowded in late August (of course), but it's a nice sand beach with a bar/restaurant, umbrella rentals, and boat rentals. There is also paid parking for 6 euros. Some areas of the beach have a lot of algae/seaweed, which our kids didn't love. The surf was very gentle. Not the best beach we've been to on Elba, but still beautiful.

Our family rented a zodiac type inflatable boat - for a half day then a whole day. We had a great time touring the island, finding Beaches with no one there, anchoring and swimming and enjoying beautiful Elba. Stefano and the staff is great, very helpful and speaks English. The price was reasonable and we look forward to returning. The bay they are on gets sub late in the day.
