After a long night of having bbq and drinking, the trip there was a bit hard. But swimming in the water. Seeing the different fish, watching the birds, seeing the nosebears and seeing the swimming monkeys.

We are 3 English birders/natural history enthusiasts and visited Brazil's Pantanal late September 2012. This was a 3 centre trip superbly organised by Carlos Grandez of pantanal ecoexplorer. We stayed 3 nights on a houseboat on the Paraguay river, bordering Bolivia, near the excellent Taima reserve. This was an absolutely amazing experience, the boat itself was way above our expectations with the food and staff being fantastic. Daily trips were made from here along the Paraguay river in search, primarily,of Jaguar and other wildlife gems. Our boatman,Mato, spoke no English and we speak no Portugese but this in no way stopped us from seeing and phootgraphing some incredible birds/animals (incuding a full 35mins up close and personal with 2 Jaguars). Mato's sense of humour of was matched only by his sight, often seeing things with his naked eye that we struggled to find using binoculars! A mixture of hand signals and mime actions was enough to allow us to let Mato know where we needed to be for that best photo, his boat-handling skills were incredible! The next part of our journey saw us at Wilderness Lodge in the grounds of the magnificent and imposing Sao Sebastiao ranch, a huge place set miles and miles away from any other habitation. The birding immediately around the lodge was awesome, Hyacinth Macaws, Aracaris,Red legged Seriema and easily seen/photographed. One of the special targets here was Maned Wolf (think red fox on stilts!) which we managed to see on our last day along with Jaguarundi and Giant Anteater was also seen on one of the daily "safaris" around the lodges vast estate. We had many, many different bird species with the added bonus of being almost alone wherever we found ourselves. Our final base was Pouso Alegre on the Northern part of the Transpantaneira, a magical place to stay for all lovers of anything to do with natural history. If you get the chance, have a talk with the owner (Luis Campos) and you will be gobsmacked with his knowledge of wildlife in general but especially with his expertise on everything to do with snakes. If you are considering a trip to Brazil, you could NOT do better than visiting the Pantanal and I doubt if anyone knows more about the area's wildlife than Carlos and his team. Contact him and let him organise an unforgettable trip for you, you will NOT be disappointed ,you may arrive as a guest but you will leave as a FRIEND. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marco do Jauru is a very simple monument, but it has a significant historical meaning. Whenever you get there, you know you're in the very heart of the city, where everything got started.

It's a place where you can easily go at the end of the afternoon for a walk or just relaxing. The sunset is beautiful. Unfortunately, I do not suggest that anyone swims there, because the water is dirty.

Until recently this place was THE best place to see/photograph Jaguars it has the highest concentration of these magnificent cats in Brazil. However, due mainly to research by American Biologists(although absolutely warranted) the jaguars here now seem very wary of approaching motorised canoes. If Jaguar is your ultimate target, try the riverine habitats around the southern Transpantaneira at Porto Joffre. Up close and personal, often prolonged views are pretty much guaranteed here given a 2-4 day search. Be aware, though, these views are almost certainly going to be shared with other eco-tourists in (sometimes noisy) groups of up to 9/10 canoes..Taiama will NOT have anywhere near the number of tourists, jaguar viewing will seem much more "natural" especially as here they are often seen in jungley background unlike many of the white sandy-beach views at Porto Jofre. The bird life around Taiama on the Paraguay river is exceptional as is the Pantanal omni-present views of Caiman and Caybara. We stayed on a boat-house,exceptionally good food and superb accommodation, and had daily forays up-river to search for wildlife. Our itnerary was organised by Carlos Grandez of pantanalecoexplorer. If you are thinking of visiting this part of the Pantanal(or indeed any part!) I can recommend you contact him. His knowledge of the whole area and it's many fascinating sights is second to none. I can guarantee that you will NOT be disappointed and that at the end of any trip, you will also count on Carlos as a friend.

It's really a historical museum of the city. They've got samples of ancient historical items from archeological works, many things regarding day-to-day life, political, religious, communication items. They have a cool collection of Brazil's currencies through time. Good place to go to!
