Laugarvatn Fontana is composed of a series of interconnected baths and steam rooms that complement each other to create a healthy, natural and unique spa experience.Three steam rooms, collectively called GUFAN, have been built over a natural hot spring that has been used since 1929. The temperature of the steam varies depending on the temperature of the hot spring and weather, usually between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F). Humidity is very high in the steam room cabins. Grids in the floor of the steam rooms allow guests to hear and smell the boiling natural hot spring underneath, creating a natural and totally unique experience.Next to the steam room is YLUR, a Finnish-style sauna. The temperature is between 80°C (176°F) and 90°C (194°F), with a lower humidity than the steam room having a big window facing the lake of Laugarvatn. LAUGA, SÆLA, and VISKA are interconnected outdoor mineral baths that vary in depth, size and temperature. Some areas are suitable for relaxation and others offer space for movement and playfull moments. Stone artwork made by Icelandic artist, Erla Thórarinsdóttir, enhance each visitor’s experience. VISKA, the hot tub, is built at a slightly higher level than the other baths, providing a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings while the healthy water nourishes both body and soul.Completing the ensemble are VATNIÐ and STRÖNDIN — the lake and the beach. Visitors will reach VATNIÐ through a gate. STRÖNDIN has warm black sand, which has been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from arthritis and other joint illnesses. VATNIÐ provides an opportunity to cool down between visits to GUFAN and YLUR, a temperature shift that is both healthy and strengthening
We visited Fontana as part of a Golden Circle tour and really enjoyed it. Started with the Rye bread making demonstration and tasting. Bread tastes great with butter. Then to the baths. Initial trepidation over the communal showers overcome very quickly. Pulling on your costume over a wet body was the hardest part!! Lockers are free to use. We took our own towels and there is somewhere to hang them outside. It was very cold when you step out of the changing rooms but once in the hot water it is wonderful. It was not too busy and you could go from pool to pool. We didn't use the steam room but they are there. There is a nice cafe where we had a hot drink before leaving.

Bruarfoss Waterfall is hard to find, but worth the hunt. Not located on many maps or in travel books, use google maps or a god device to try and track down how best to reach. There is a small trail, and a few fences to climb over. You do have to park on public streets, so be kind and don’t block anyone’s driveway or cause a traffic issue.

We went in January and let me tell you, my hands have never been so cold. They suit you up in a dry suit and a wet suit and my body was perfectly comfy, but my hands were so cold it was painful. What a cool experience though! The water is shockingly blue and our guide was super friendly.

We did a one hour ride with 4 teenagers and 2 adults. It was FANTASTIC and they provided some warm cloth to put under the helmets. Rain pants were available, but it was WARM AND SUNNY for us! Horses were wonderful and well trained, guide was very friendly and checked in with us to see how we were. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Go early, the sun rising was amazing along the river.

Can you imagine how it is to live in a cave? Well less than 100 years ago a normal Icelandic family did! The Caves have been renovated the way they looked when the last Cave People in Iceland lived there only a Century ago. Join us in a Guided tour in the Caves and their Surroundings and we will bring the story to life with amazing tales about how they lived, their struggles and their happiness.
Upon landing in Iceland, one will notice many small "mountain homes" while driving through the country. The children thought they were very neat and were wondered who, when and how people lived in these homes. While staying near Selfoss, we were looking for interesting places, to learn about Iceland. Our hotel recommended the Cave people. En route Thingvellir we decided to make this a stop. The signage is a bit difficult to see from the main road but once we notice the black and white sign, we drove along a dirt road leading us to a tent. We could see the house from the road. We arrived and promptly the owner was there to welcome us to the home. The tour lasts about 20-30 minutes and it was such an interesting guide. He is quite knowledgeable in history and it was a privilege to see how this family lived in a cave house years ago and the stories that transpired. We left with a nice coffee and authentic Iceland sweets. Truly should not be missed. The owners did a wonderful job re-creating the original house.

Located 31 miles east of Reykjavik, this is Iceland's most historic site and one of its most scenic landscapes.
We went through Thingvellir as part the last full day of a south Iceland photography workshop. The terrain is amazing with wide vistas, geological formations including the fault line between the American and Europe tectonic plates, a massive lake, and Waterfalls. Admission and parking was free.

After so many geysers and lakes and Waterfalls and hot Springs, you really need to see something else as well to be able to still fully enjoy the Icelandic nature.
The Skalholt Cathedral is a great place to stop. The former religious and cultural capital of Iceland (for several centuries!), Skalholt doesn't exist anymore as a settlement now, so you'll only see the Cathedral here, along with some houses nearby that host restaurant and tourist facilities and, of course, the beautiful Icelandic fields.
Even though the building is relatively new, it's very pretty and a good photo spot. You can actually go inside the church, which I advise you to, as the altar is decorated quite uniquely, with a modern religious painting. From the church you can also visit the underground, which is organized as a small museum about the history of Skalholt and the old Cathedral. From there you can exit via a small underground tunnel leading you to one side of the church. On the other side of the church there is a replica of an old Icelandic grass-rooftop church, also worth seeing.
A great, peaceful place to stop on your Golden Circle tour! Spend 30 minutes here.
