It’s roughly a 25-minute walk up the designated trail to see the famous snow monkeys in their natural habitat. That said, it was a particularly warm day in March, which meant that melting ice turned the trail into a muddy mess. Luckily, visitors can rent boots (800 yen/pair) at the Tourist Information Center. I opted for the rental and saved myself the headache of cleaning up muddy shoes & pants. Once you enter the Snow Monkey Park, it truly is monkeys galore! However, as the temperatures rise with the coming of spring, don’t expect to see many monkeys bathing in the onsen. We only saw one monkey taking a dip mid-March.

Shiga Kogan is a vast network of resorts. Ski somewhere different every day for a two weeks and you will never get bored. Probably my favourite resort in Japan. Negatives: limited nightlife/ restsurants/bars. Snowboarders will note a lack of park areas (but who cares?) Thousands of school kids .... Everywhere. However, the skiing is amazing and that's what we go there for.

All of the hard runs were closed leaving only easy green runs open, that was a pity after the 1 hour bus ride.
The runs that were open mainly followed summer roads up the mountain and were a real bottleneck of learners making it almost impossible to pass. Think lines of people pizza turning.
When you get past those sections it's almost flat which means no speed.
The Crumpet Cafe directly above the lift is great, it used to be a Starbucks.

Shiga Kogen is the biggest ski area in Japan, and it has 19 connected ski resorts. The main resort here is Yakebitaiyama that offers various ski trails for all levels on a huge hill covered with “Platinum Snow”. There are 3 Shiga Kogen Prince Hotels (East, South and West) at the base of Yakebitaiyama. This area is also popular for Snow Monkey watching.
This ski area lies between Ichinose and Okushigakogen and incorporates two gondolas and several lifts. The runs are wide and cruisy, with some steeps and good variety. It would be an enjoyable "resort" by itself but with the easy links to other areas there's really something for every skier or boarder to enjoy.

Kita Shiga Ryuoo Ski Park is located in the northern region of Nagano Prefecture, takes half and hour from Nagano station by NAGANO dentetsu train. There is an excellent variety of courses at the resort catering for all skill levels, including a selection of ungroomed powder courses. The resort also caters for those looking for snow activities as well as skiing and snowboarding. The Kiotoshi courses are found connecting the top Sky Land area of the resort and the Valley Area. If you're looking for deep fresh powder snow on ungroomed areas, then this is the place for you. As these courses are for advanced riders, beginners are advised to use the ropeway to go down from the Sky Land area to the Valley Area rather than challenge these courses.
Having never been on skis in our lives we booked a lesson at the Ryuoo International Snow Academy. Our instructor Tony was amazing, spoke 4 languages at least ans had my wife and 7 year old daughter skiing solo after just 4 hours of instruction. Tony was kind and patient and had a great attitude and made the experience really memorable for us. On our second day we were able to get on the slopes with no assistance whatsoever and we highly recommend Tony and the school to anyone wanting to try skiing for the first time.

This combined sake and beer brewery offer great looks to the production facilities from the outside or inside the sake gallery. We forund th e same tasting to be free of charge and self service - thank you. The beer room however has a charge to every taste of beer - it is more like a bar. Good way to spand and hour totally - unless you fall in at the beer bar.

Great for beginners. Most unusual rope tow at the top. Ski through tunnels which is fun. The return to the bus terminal is a killer - hard to find and not easy to get to. This could be designed better - perhaps the entire Shigakogen area needs a great town planner as there's too much pushing, walking and shuffling getting around. It's definitely not easy.
