We came here late after visiting the monkey park. Nothing else seemed to be open (it was around 2.45pm), but this place was. The friendly owner cooked us some cheap, tasty noodles. It's very dated - seems as if it's probably been exactly the same for 50 years. Does the job though! Wasn't open at 8am for breakfast. Opening hours seem very intermittent in this town.

Unfortunately there was a snow storm the day we went there so we cannot account for the view. At least the ski lifts were still working and we apreciated the possibility of getting there.
We had coffee (which one has to order at the machine) and red bean bread (ordered over the counter). It was just ok, far from being the beat red bean bread we have had.
The staff was friendly.
The thing that really spoiled it for us was a dog chained at the entrance door. Its fur was in bad condition and even though it could go inside the restaurant the automatic sliding doors kept on opening and letting the cold in.

We were staying at Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel West Building, and this restaurant is in Ichinose, which is the village nearby. From the hotel it was about a 15 minute walk, there is a shuttle bus into town in the evenings but it was relatively infrequent.
The restaurant staff were very friendly, and the naan was really good - it was nice to have something different. We had the Lumbini set, and along with the naan the meat was great, the only thing a bit odd was the curry. There were 4 types - chicken, mutton, vegetable or keema (minced meat), but as far as we could tell they were practically identical!
If you're staying near Ichinose or at Prince Hotel and want a good and well-priced meal, definitely stop here one night.

You can enjoy the great light taste of Kansai-style warm buckwheat. Combination of 10 percent cold buckwheat and buckwheat soup Koikuchi distilled in kelp Rausu is excellent .Rausu-an is a soba restaurant with a taste of the best class in Japan. It is a great place to warm the cold body after you have visited the Monkey Park.It is very close from the bus stop back to Nagano.!! Highly recommended.

The Italian Restaurant at the Grand Phenix Hotel has large glass windows with views of the mountain. Saito san is professional and sets high standards of service. The food is delicious and we have had many meals over 8 years, the most recent just days ago while returning to another stay at the Grand Phenix. The restaurant has a good wine list including half bottles and offers a degustation meal with selections of anti pasta, pasta, soup, meat/fish and dessert. All delicious if you can eat it all. With prior arrangement they have been very accomodating for our vegetarian friend too! This year also served by Atako san who spoke very good English too! You can also ski in for a special lunch...not to be missed

We were recommended here by the hotel next door, it took some finding as the signs werent lit up and it looked like someones front room! It even had a TV and Budgie in the corner! The owners are lovely and friendly, enough english/photo menu/pointing etc gets you a great meal. I recommend the roast pork noodles! The pork katsu is good too.

We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor and decided it was worth a shot whle staying close by in Shibu Onsen - so glad we did we had a great night - food was excellent, the ambience is fantastic with Sumo posters everywhere - apparently the chef was once trained by a famous Sumo.
We ate Chanko Nabe like many others that have reviewed the restaurant - we arent pork eaters so it was nice that the stock is chicken based. The food of Sumos!
he chef is a lovely man and while we were waiting for a pickup from the hotel at the end of the night he brought out his personal Sake for us to share while we watched a Samurai movie! Not much English but we all worked it out!
His wife (I assume) waited on us and was a beautiful person.
I love this place and If we ever go back to Yamanouchi we will certainly drop by again - highly recommended!

We were staying at Suminoyu and our hosts recommended this place for lunch. We only stayed one night at the Shibu Onsen area, so only this meal was taken outside of our accommodation - we glad it was here. We enjoyed 2 soba dishes, the chicken yakitori and some sort of steamed bun filled with red bean for a total of 2000 yen. All the food was tasty, especially the red bean bun, but most of all, it was the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff that made the visit worthwhile. Its a small place, with traditional Seating on the floor, decorated warmly with various posters and figurines all over the walls. The elderly lady serving us and the cook were so friendly and after our meal they offered us complimentary biscuits and freshly cut apples that we saw had just been delivered while we ate. We felt like we were welcomed into their home for lunch and they really wanted us to come again when we left.
