I wouldn't call this area beautiful, but it is wide open spaces, long views and some very striking hills and Valleys. Great walking country.

On Sunday 29th October 2017 local author John Billingsley who specialises in quirky stories and finding interesting niches to explore lead a Calderdale Heritage Walk around Heptontall. It was on the eve of Halloween, and the stories had a typically macabre flavour, with John entertaining a large group of about 25 participants. It was a chilly afternoon temperature wise, equally matched by John's chilling tales. We had a wander through the winding backstreets and alleyways of this fascinating medieval hilltop settlement.. We learnt something of its intriguing history and local characters, seeing several features that the general tourist might easily miss. We ended up at the atmospheric deserted church just as the sun was setting, adding to the spooky setting at the end of an informative tour.

We visited Animal Quackers today and we absolutely enjoyed it! Our little boy loved the birds and snake and the part where you get to hold the animals.
Amazing and friendly staff, proper down to earth! Price is very modest and food is not bad too! Would highly recommend for young families.

A traditional village pub in the heart of the Medieval township of Heptonstall set in the Pennine hills. Large selection of quality real ales, ciders and wines and an extensive selection of gins. Excellent choice of home-cooked pub fayre, vegetarian options and daily specials menu. Eclectic and friendly customers. Sunny beer garden to the rear. Dog friendly. Featured in the Good Beer Guide, 2014 and 2015.
I was mightily impressed by their offering several (six?) different vegan meals! In a pub! In a small, hilltop village in West Yorkshire! I was here early afternoon on a Wednesday in December, and since my last visit in February, the menu has expanded to cater very well for vegans. I had a tasty and satisfying meal of steak-style pie, fries, three vegetables – and vegan gravy too! Kudos to the chef. It’s a cozy, welcoming pub, and I enjoyed a leisurely meal and pint. Don’t be in a hurry; good food takes time. I walked up the rather steep path from Hebden Bridge, and it’s worth the climb. I’ll try to get up here again during my two-week Hebden Bridge stay.

Went here years ago when I was little, and even though I live near I don't go often but went for the opening after the floods and enjoyed every minute of it.
Toilets clean, little bar area. Easy access. Also heard you can have functions here.
Going again soon.

This is a National Trust place with good parking facilities.Lovely walk right down by the river or a less challenging walk on the top path.Ideal for pushchairs.Great for dog walking with Gibson's Mill at the end which has a National Trust cafe and small shop.Ideal for light lunches, cake and tea and coffee.Cosey woodburner on winter days to sit around.Check opening times for the cafe as in the summer it doesn't open on fridays and in the winter it only opens at the weekends.

wanted to have a walk round the lake but the weather beat us to it -driving snow and wind , so we decide to have a drink and a toasted teacake in the cafe next to the visitor centre , although not big the girl serving was pleasant and extremely quick as she was on her own and quite a few people came in after us we expected to wait a while but not so, its not expensive either , so well come again when the weather is better and experience the walk around the lake and the cafe

Park opposite the Shepherd's Rest pub and following the well worn path.
It's a short steep work but worth the energy for the views and the water at the top.
Many reviews cover how nice this is. Plenty of walking routes in the surrounding area.
Only negative is the lowlife who leave their rubbish and BBQs up on the top. Leave no trace!
Pub recommended at the bottom.

Booked table for evening meal. Nice food all be it a little more expensive than surrounding pubs. Good service with friendly and polite staff. Not rushed at table. This pub is very cosy and in a beautiful setting. Well worth a visit.
