This respite along the legendary/infamous Route 4 is a must do to view of 800 year old Douglas Firs. The Grove is about twenty minutes from either Parksville or Port Alberni. The grove straddles the road and parking is on either side.
This is an extremely popular spot. There have been a few times we just drive by due to the lack of parking spaces. Coming early, late or just being lucky will help.
The largest trees in the grove go upwards to 250ft/75 meters, and 29feet/9meters in circumference. There are some large Red Cedar trees too. Just think that the oldest trees in the grove are the same age as the construction of Chartres Cathedral in France.
Science tells us there was a huge fire in the grove 350 years ago. These Douglas Firs can withstand this type of destruction, but not at the hands of man.
We are in our sixties and walking through the grove uplifts our spirits and wonderment. I think children would fine this grove even more spectacular.

I came upon the Soaring Centre just browsing adds in my room. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the 30 minute flight. The pilots and ground folks were very nice and even pointed out Air Jordon's private jet sitting in the salvage area. The pilot provided a very good overview and pointed out things as we flew. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Only came upon this place after a recommendation from the Port Alberni Visitors Centre. So glad we took their advice.
The walk up to the falls and salmon ladder is beautiful but the sight of the salmon waiting in the pools and then attempting the near impossible flight up the falls is simply awe inspiring. A 'must do' if you are in the area in the Fall.

Coombs Country Candy has a selection of Handmade Confections and Candy including Caramel Corn, Peanut Brittle, Fudge, Chocolates, Caramel Apples, Ice Cream, and more. All our Candy is Handmade on site in a displayed cooking area where you can watch the Candy Man and his staff make your favourites. Located on the Highway in Port Alberni on your way to Tofino, it's a perfect stop for a treat.
This is a great stop if you're driving between the east coast and Ucluelet or Tofino. It's on the main highway and on the right on the hill just east of Port Alberni, as you enter, so you don't waste time caught up in a mall car park.
We've stopped for coffee, ice cream and a snack before now. There are washrooms, accessible outside the premises.

The Port Alberni HARBOUR QUAY is a wonderful place to walk around on a sunny day.
There was an outdoor craft fair going on, gift stores, donut shop, beautiful wood sculptures and amazing waterfront views.
My favourite activity was climbing the 360 degree-view TOWER CLOCK.
Don't forget your camera because there's great photo ops everywhere.

Welcome to McLean Mill Historic Park - We are currently open for self guided tours of the 32 acre property. Nature trails, a stream, salmon enhancement, old time logging equipment and static national historic site. Fri-Sunday 10-3pm Our gift shop is open, with pop -up coffee shop.
Costs 10.00 for admission and takes maybe an hour to tour. The forest itself is breathtaking but the rest is kinda lacking in my opinion. Was kinda cool to tour the sawmill portion.
I wonder what they use the 10.00 per person fee towards???
Stopped in to cafe on way out to see about a possible bite to eat and they wanted 6.50 for a hotdog.
I would suggest doing if they offer coupons.

Bringing people together in one space to drink meticulously crafted beer and enjoy thoughtfully prepared food. Our brewery and lounge is nestled in the Alberni Valley on Vancouver Island, BC. Come visit us!
I have enjoyed twin city's beers several times from growlers, but only recently stuck around the brewery for a drink and some food. The prices were very reasonable - $10 pizzas, which were quite generous in size and $6 pints. They have both house beers and guest drafts, which were both great. I'd recommend the Porter Alberni!
Staff were very friendly, and they are always willing to give tasters. The only thing I hope they change is to do something about the noise - laughing and loud voices seem to really resonate in the space.
Hope I get to visit again soon!

Nestled in the most scenic part of the valley..Sprout Lake offers everything from walking hiking paths around its perimeter to ample beach locations for sitting and sunbathing..and any other water activities. Some spots quite private and cozy of that's what you're looking for. Come on in..the water's fine! Warm in the summer by local standards. Excellent location to launch a kayak or go swimming or SUP-ing the Panorama is breathtaking, with the giant facades of mt Arrowsmith and Cokely ridge visible in one direction, and the imposing countenance of Mt Klitsa at the western end. Both of these mountain destinations also recommended day hikes/climbs for those looking for a bit of a more strenuous hike. Minutes west of greater Port Alberni, and with ample parking..a campground..and facilities. .this is an excellent day trip retreat..or multi day place to enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery. Often times the famous Martin Mars water bomber can be seen moored at the west end of the lake.. many people paddle around it to get a closer look. Come see what you can find here! Every trip I've taken to the lake has offerred a different experience!

Unfortunately we didn't have time to travel on the train due to lack of time, but would very much have liked to. So we just stopped by to see what was at the station. The folks there were delightful. They were very knowledgable, explaining everything and showing us the little museum and model Railways that were under construction. From our brief visit I'm sure that people doing the trip would be assured of a great trip.
