UNIQUE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE Visit a unique museum in France which is protecting a vast gallo-roman house vestiges, the Vésone Domus. Opened since 2003, in the heart of archaeological and plants park, Vesunna offers a 3000 m2 itinerary of permanent presentation of antique Perigueux. AN ARCHITECTURE BY JEAN NOUVEL Jean Nouvel the building project architect has completed a great number of works throughout the world. He is in particular the architect of the Quai Branly museum in Paris. A large umbrella, which is protecting the antic walls, floats above it. From the mezzanines, an impressive view opens onto the vestiges. Further on, the high glass walls reveal the landscaped Gardens of the Vesone Tower and the IVth century rampart vestiges. The building is like a window onto the past which is buried under the modern city.
This is a very interesting museum which provides excellent information about the exhibits with an English audio guide. The remnants of the ancient house and the extensive range of very interesting artifacts are very well displayed in a superb modern building.

What we will show you is a fabulous journey, from the heart of the earth to the heart of men, between geology, history and a human adventure. Discovered in 1995, the TOURTOIRAC CAVE marvels its inventor and his caver friends. Over time, water and nature have dug the cavity and have decorated and designed in a huge fresco. Following the underground river, you will be immersed in a spectacle of light and shadow between columns and draperies, eccentrics and fistulas. This unforgettable journey to TOURTOIRAC will lead you to discover this village marked first by the prehistory then the history of an ancient abbey.
Looks very small and unimpressive from the outside – just a little building in a dusty car-park – but inside is a lovely little souvenir shop and ticket office which provides access to the caves via a lift. English language tours are available (best to check times in advance) and the guide was very informative – helpfully pointing out items with a torch and answering questions. Cave itself was quite impressive – lots of the eccentrics and draperies as well as the usual stalactites, stalagmites and columns – but not very large. Whole tour took about 50 minutes but was quite dragged out. Little kids were getting bored by the end but that was mainly because it turned out not the be the Batcave…

Just off the N21 through Trelissac is a beautiful spot to stop and spend a while walking by the river.
There is a small car park, shaded by trees, and then a track which runs along side the river bank to the bridge and beyond. A low weir provides the gentle sounds of running water burbling over the brink.Really serenely peaceful.

Arrive early as there is not enough parking near the market. This market is the one in your dreams - truly. It goes on forever and has the best looking vegetables, cheese, meat/fish -live hens, wonderful eggs. Flowers that spark the entire scene. Coffee and wine bars and stores readily available every few feet. This is really a must if you are anywhere close. Go you will be very very happy that you did. Would go every week if I lived in the area.

Discovering Perigueux is like looking through a history book. Climb aboard the time machine and let's discover the history of our town.
Worth the effort of finding - on a road going out of town. helpful, friendly staff who spoke good English and answered our questions about the Wednesday market - definitely worth a visit! Would have got full marks if they'd pointed out the music and special gourmet evening event that took over when the traditional market closed! Get to this when it's on again!

A modern showpiece it is not, but it is a eclectic collection which does give a insight into the history of the area and of France overall. I particularly liked the Napoleonic era artefacts. There were some Nazi era artefacts - I have never seen so many before. I think it is right to display them in this setting as they are part of the historical record and demonstrate what happened at that time. My companion decided to go shopping while I visited the museum- this may be a good option for some people!

Visited here on a quiet Friday afternoon.
This is a much smaller, and different style of church to the main Cathedral. Personally I thought it was prettier, and whilst not a great deal inside, still in my opinion stood-out compared to its larger companion. Definitely worth a wander round if you're in the area.

Little park in the former roman Amphitheater, part of the roman walk and worth a visit. Though the floor lies some 5 meter below the current park (according to the information given), the higher levels of the theater remain visible today. Amazingly the site was used as a quarry for a long time.
Despite this, a few arches are still visible today which give the visitor a sense of the original scale. The building was included into the ‘defense wall’ that was constructed in a hurry whiles the roman empire was falling. You walk to the ‘Norman gate’ and barrier from here.
The park is now more of a playground for children and the trees provide shade in summer. Good to have a pick-nick or just rest a little on your city walk.

A very interesting museum with many historic and archeological displays as well as others from different parts of the world - Africa, Oceania, Egypt and the Mediterranean
We found the Prehistory, Neanderthal World and Home Sapiens World displays very interesting and informative.
There is also some very good Sculptures and fine arts to see as well.
It was also open all day (no lunch hours)
Well worth a visit
