Oviedo is a treasure trove of Spanish religious architecture, dotted with monasteries, cathedrals and shrines that date all the way back to the 9th century. Santa Maria del Naranco

When you travel as much as we do, we can be forgiven for not wanting to visit another church. This one is an exception. It may be plain, so you're not here for the decoration. It's the history that matters here. That said, I found the architecture (and nearby, beautiful chapel) quite fascinating. Clearly a period piece, it is beautiful in its starkness. Getting on tour can be a pain; probably the one downside. Definitely worth making the side trip. Do not forget to walk to the nearby chapel.

A little jewel of a church and more to see than the other two churches. The woman attendant is very helpful in answering questions and will take time to point out some of the more intrestng details. About 20 min. is enough time. It is lovely to know it is a working parish church. The day we visited, it was decorated with fresh flowers for a first communion service the next day.

Monte Naranco

Me and my grandfather decided to walk up to Monte Naranco as we'd heard that there was excellent views of Asturias. We'd already visited the Cathedral, so thought this would be a good thing to do for a day.
On the way up we realised that we were passing the Santa Maria Del Naranco and the San Miguel Del Lillo, two beautiful buildings that are also listed as attractions on TripAdvisor.
It was about 3km from the two aforementioned buildings to the top of Monte Naranco and could get very steep at a couple of points, but the Christ statue at the summit, along with the views, made it worth it.
Would recommend (even if just go up by car)

Absolutely amazing that you must see it while in Oviedo. Some of the greatest artists along with many local artists. All open to the public and it is free. The layout is spectacular with exceptional lighting. The front part of the building is more modern but as you move into building 2&3 it is more tradition and well preserved. I love the facade outside to keep up with the architecture of the old city. A must see!!!!
