Top 10 Things to do in Obergurgl, Austria

September 17, 2017 Madelene Haan

Heaven isn’t too far away from Obergurgl. Maybe because, at 6000 feet elevation, it’s the highest church parish in Austria. Or maybe it’s just the skiing. Take a guided tour with an expert mountaineer, explore the wintery dreamscape off-piste or get exclusive “early bird” slope access that ends with oysters and champagne. Or ditch the skis and go for a winter hike or thrilling toboggan ride. Ski huts and rest stops range from rustic to futuristic, all with panoramic views.

If you ever drive to Italy from Austria or vice versa don't cheat yourself for this trip through the Timmelsjoch pass via via Ötztal.
Narrow roads and some really amazing views - bring lunch and stop somewhere and enjoy it and the views.
Do remember cash for the toll road - no cards accepted last time I did the trip ;)

What a fantastic restaurant, perched on the top / side of a mountain. The only problem with this small place it's it's size in relation to it's popularity - it doesn't take many people to make it full and the toilets certainly couldn't cope with the high number of guests.

Gaislachkoglbahn

Reviewed By Aquilegia_blue - Beverley, United Kingdom

We enjoyed the two cable car rides to reach the top of Gaislachkogl. Once there, we spent no more than 45 minutes enjoying the views, then returned to the middle station where there were far greater opportunities for walking. We took advantage of our Otztal card to pay for this this cable car ride - the rates without a card (37 euros per adult) were far too expensive for us to have considered the trip otherwise.
In all, I would recommend the Gaislachkoglbahn on a fine day to appreciate the views but would not consider it a 'must-do' activity if costs are an issue.

Obergurgl Hochgurgl Ski Area

Reviewed By Andy C - Southend-on-Sea, United Kingdom

I understand this resort won't suit everyone and if you are one who wants to do loads of mileage and you are an expert skier, it probably isn't for you. However, for us, very active 50+ probably considered advanced skiers, it was perfect. The conditions were excellent, some of the views outstanding, skiing in and out of the hotel and slopes uncrowded, what more could you want. I didn't find any of the slopes massively challenging, even the blacks but that was fine all four of us would definitely return. Hochgurgl had more skiing for us but a 10 min bubble car is all it is each way, so very easy. I don't think I have ever been to a resort where there is virtually no queuing. Can't wait to go back.

Solden and everyone in it made our stay unforgetable. The natural scenery was as perfect as you can imagine the Austrian Alps to be. So much to do for all levels of physical capabilities. Hiking was superb. Local food was excellent. Points of interest everywhere. Loved our visit to Solden.

Skischule Obergurgl

Obergurgl Ski School - a Tradition since 1922 One of the best ski schools in Austria! The ski resort of Obergurgl - Hochgurgl at the end of the Oetz Valley is the highest and one of the most snow- sure and best skiing areas in Austria. For almost 90 years now, the Obergurgl Ski School has been at the heart of the region with over 100 qualified ski instructors and a comprehensive programme that includes all kinds of winter sports for all people at all levels.

My wife and I both spent a week skiing in Obergurgl and both had a great time in different school groups. We both found our instructors able to strike a good balance between instruction and just plain enjoyment of the skiing while also able to judge well the abilities of group members and to recommend moving up to a new group where appropriate.
We obviously benefited from their excellent knowledge of both Obergurgl and also Hochgurgl (both groups also visited the neighbouring ski area) and the guidance around the ski areas generally.
Happy to recommend the school, their instructors and the overall professionalism based on our experience.

I imagine it is particularly beautiful in the summer but we enjoyed exploring on the trail from the Zirbenwald restaurant and into the woods. Lovely area. Peaceful.
