The most beautiful ghat i have ever seen in India! I just wish it was more maintained and not allowed food vendors and coaxing boatwalas. We were so awestruck by the magnanimity of the ghat and the stone structures surrounding it. Bless the queen Ahilyabai Holkar for building such beautiful monuments all over MP. Such a thorough job of artsmanship. A must must on your travel bucket list. Would love to go back stay there for couple of days.

Many scientists identify Maheshwar as the ancient town of Mahishmati.
Believed that Maheshvar is built on the site of the ancient city of Somvangshya Shastrjun Kshatriya and was the capital of the king of Kartavirya Arjuna (Shree Shastrarjun), which is mentioned in the Sanskrit epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Maheshwar Fort is well preserved to the present day. He stands majestically on the bank of the river, surrounded by many temples and ghats. It is best to enjoy the view of the fort, from the river, hiring a boat.

Ahilyeshwar Shivalaya also known as Ahilya Bai’s chatri was built by her daughter Krishna Bai in queen’s honor. Built in Nagara style of temple architecture it has a pillared mandapa, leading to a short antrala or vestibule and then on to the garbhagriha or sanctum. The garbhagriha is surmounted by a towering Shikhara capped by a brass finial. The garbhagriha has a shivalinga and marble statue of Ahilya bai. Within the complex is a temple dedicated to Lord Ram

The temple is situated within the fort and is walking distance from the ghat. There are other temples situated in the vicinity which appeared newly renovated. The main temple is old, small and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The interiors of the temple are beautifully adorned and decorated with glass pieces.

This temple is beside the frequented ahilya ghats. However, only a few people visit this temple. This temple offers beautiful vistas of the river, it being at a higher elevation than the Ahilyeshwar temple. Do visit the temple on your vist to maheshwar.

This is undoubtedly the most beautiful temple in Maheshwar. On the banks of the Narmada- inside the Ahilya Fort complex this is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The architecture of the temple is very good and it overlooks the Ahilya Ghat. Do note that you will have to climb several steps if you are coming from the ghat area, Worth a visit.

Sahastradhara literally means thousand streams and this impression is formed when river Narmada flows through rocky river bed. The place should be visited in Monsoons to get the impression of thousand streams. However, during other times the water level is low, still it is place worth visiting. The place is about 5- 6 Kms from the Maheshwar town.

Its a good place to see the entire process of Maheswari saree weaving. Since it is inside the fort just above the Ahilyeshwar Temple , its worth a visit. For shopping fanatics there is a small shop at the left side of the entrance that sells sarees, scarfs, dupattas and unstitched cloth.

Shree Datta Dham is located a small distance before reaching Sahstradhara. The entrance to the dham is attractive with double gates and there is ample parking place for vehicles on crossing the first gate. The temple complex is spacious and the ambiance inside is divine. The place is revered by Shree Datta devotees.
